Rare earth separation has run on the same toxic solvent extraction since the 1960s. Alta Resource Technologies is using proteins to do the separation instead, aimed squarely at China's monopoly on refining. This is the Material Revolution applied to mining waste, not just biomass. Via C&EN.

ORNL just told the industry the quiet part: bioindustrial scale-up is not a biology problem, it is a manufacturing systems problem. Its new BioMADE membership bets on robotics, materials science and process engineering, not another strain improvement. That is the bottleneck we underwrite.

We’re swallowing microplastics. What happens inside us?

New research suggests these particles can generate reactive radicals in water, raising fresh questions about potential health risks.

CANCER SHOULDN’T BE PART OF THE JOB.

The EU is tightening workplace limits on cancer-causing chemicals.

But what if we redesigned production, not just exposure limits?

Biomanufacturing could replace some hazardous chemistry with bio-based processes.

AI’S BOOM. FOREVER CHEMICALS’ COMEBACK.

Greenpeace warns AI data centers are fueling new demand for PFAS, including in cooling systems.

The future of AI shouldn’t leave a toxic legacy. Innovation must mean safer materials, too.

Biomanufacturing can help build a safer chemical future.

As chemical-security threats evolve, the response requires stronger detection, global cooperation and smarter production.

Biomanufacturing can reduce reliance on hazardous feedstocks and fragile chemical supply chains by producing valuable materials through biological processes, with safety and security built in from the start.

The opportunity is to pair INTERPOL’s call for cross-border chemical security with innovation that makes supply chains more resilient, traceable and sustainable.

Bio-Based Is Not a Silver Bullet for Chemical Decarbonization

Feedstock limits, cost pressures, infrastructure gaps, and questions around scalability are forcing the industry to look beyond the hype and focus on what can truly deliver emissions reductions at scale.

The future is not just bio-based. It is practical, measurable, and built for real-world adoption.

Bio-Based Chemicals Are Not Automatically Green. Here’s the Reality Check.

The race to decarbonize chemicals is accelerating, but “bio-based” does not guarantee lower emissions, stronger economics, or scalable impact.

The real question is not whether a material comes from biomass. It is how it is made, what energy powers production, and whether the route can compete at commercial scale.

Europe’s chemical supply chains are under pressure to prove what is in every input, where it came from, and whether it meets stringent EU requirements.

Biomanufacturing can be part of the answer.

By producing specialty ingredients through more traceable, locally scalable biological processes, companies can reduce dependence on opaque supply networks and build compliance into sourcing from day one.

The next advantage in European chemicals may not come from sourcing harder. It may come from making smarter.

America’s biotech edge is moving faster than Washington.

The next breakthrough in medicine, food, defense, and manufacturing may already be in the lab.

But biotech leaders warn that outdated U.S. policy could turn innovation into a competitive vulnerability, especially as global rivals race to build their own advantage.

The question is no longer whether biotech will reshape the economy.
It is whether the U.S. will write the rules, or fall behind them.

The real race in biotech is no longer in the lab
The next biotech giants will not be defined by who discovers the best molecule. They will be defined by who can manufacture it at industrial scale.

AI can cut timelines, increase output and reduce emissions. But it cannot replace fermentation capacity, supply chains or real-world production infrastructure.

China already produces more than 70% of global biological fermentation output. The question for every other economy is no longer whether biology can transform industry.

It is whether they can build the capacity to scale it before someone else does.

A New Mega-Plant Could Help Replace Fossil-Based Polymers Across Europe

BIOWEG will break ground in Q4 2026 on a 10,000-tonne-per-year facility in Elsdorf, aiming to replace fossil-based polymers and intentionally added microplastics with biodegradable bacterial cellulose.

A landfill fire near Jakarta burned for 10 days. The danger did not stay at the dump.

It spread through the air as microscopic plastic particles, reaching homes and communities nearby.

Indonesia’s plastic pollution crisis is no longer just in rivers or landfills. It may be in the air people breathe, the water they drink and the food they eat.

Food security is national security.

America’s food system is more than a supply chain issue. It is a strategic asset. Investing in food biomanufacturing can strengthen domestic resilience while generating valuable inputs for energy, specialty chemicals, and critical materials.

Food security belongs at the center of national security planning.
