What to build:
• Set up Splunk and ingest windows event logs
• Configure Sysmon for endpoint telemetry
• Simulate basic attacks from Kali
• Build detection rules in Splunk
You just built a functional SOC environment. For free.
Saying these won't land you the job
- I did a SOC lab
- I learned Wireshark
- I used Packet Tracer
- I ran Nmap scans
The difference is simple:
Don’t describe the lab. Describe the impact.
- What problem did you solve and why?
- How you actually did it
- What lesson did you learn from it
- What valuable skills did you acquire
- How will you use these to help them
This done and said right, gets you the job ✌️🏻
Don’t overcomplicate becoming a SOC analyst.
If you’ve ever:
- Checked Windows Event Viewer
- Investigated a failed login
- Restarted a suspicious service
- Looked through firewall logs
- Traced a user permission issue
Congrats — you’ve already done the foundation of SOC work.
SOC at its core is:
- Monitoring behavior
- Investigating anomalies
- Understanding normal vs. abnormal
Now add context:
- Log correlation
- Basic attacker techniques
- SIEM familiarity
- Clear documentation
And just like that, you’re on your way to being SOC-ready.
The real upgrade?
Stop thinking “alerts.”
Start thinking “behavior.”
It’s all about recognizing the patterns.
