๐ paper we just published documenting Lake Sturgeon feeding excavations for the first time! This was in Lake St. Clair, with excavations being found in an area acoustic telemetry revealed to be a high use area.

Check out this paper recently published on Lake Sturgeon spatial use of Lake St. Clair that we collaborated on! The study was very useful to our #sturgeon monitoring program.

We completed our Saginaw Bay forage trawl survey this week! Trout-perch were the most common forage species caught. We also caught several large rocks that tore up a few of our netsโฆ

We started our Saginaw Bay forage trawl survey today. Noteworthy catch for today were a few Lake Whitefish, which we have rarely seen during this survey in recent years.

This week we conducted our โmicro-meshโ gill net survey on Lake St. Clair, which helps us monitor the forage species in the lake. Logperch were the most common species caught.

We wrapped up our week of Lake #Sturgeon trawling on #LakeStClair today and were able to get the rest of our acoustic telemetry tags into fish!

We have another ๐จ BIG FISH ALERT ๐จ
We have a new heaviest #sturgeon for the year, with this 120 pounder caught today during our trawl survey on #LakeStClair! It was caught, measured, tagged, and released.

@andywhitcomb Radio carbon date some of the larger fish suspected to be that old to confirm whether that is plausible, similar as what was done with Greenland sharks.
@andywhitcomb The fish from our system were towards the lower longevity and more similar to previous assumptions about lake sturgeon longevity. However, the models predicted some other systems the sturgeon could be several hundred years old. Hopefully there will be an opportunity toโฆ
