Lyme disease did not exist before 1978. There are now over 300 species of bacteria that cause it, all spirochetes, all variations of Borrelia, named after Dr. Willy Burgdorfer, the man who discovered it. Dr. Burgdorfer's job for the United States military was placing bacteria inside ticks to deploy against enemy forces.

The first cases of Lyme disease appeared in Lyme, Connecticut, a town sitting just off the coast from Plum Island and Lab 257. None of this is classified information. There are books written about it. The dots aren't hard to connect.

Acute cases, that are caught within the first ten days, and treated with antibiotics are mostly manageable. But the chronic presentation, the one that devastates lives for years, is still not fully recognized by the establishment -- the same one that created the conditions for this disease to exist in the first place.

One in every twenty to thirty mosquitoes in Florida carries Borrelia. When you actually know how to test for it and start looking, the number of people walking around sick with this is something.

These aren’t unrelated crises. They share the same biological pattern — a body stuck in survival mode.

I explained that if a foreign adversary was trying to ensure our children were sick, depressed, and unproductive - they would serve American children what we currently offer in many schools.

The reasons we have the highest childhood chronic disease rates of any society in human history aren’t complicated - and it starts with taxpayer dollars going to inexcusable menus like this.

The good news is there wasn’t a person I spoke with in the room who didn’t agree that our school lunches are a national embarrassment, and we can do better under current budget levels.

For the first time in modern history, there is political momentum at the White House to fix this - and we will in collaboration with schools around the country.
