Chief Petty Officer Kevin A. Houston, DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6) Gold Squadron, killed on August 6, 2011, when Extortion 17 was shot down in Afghanistan.

Houston ranked among the most tactically skilled operators Gold Squadron ever produced. He was instrumental in the deaths of senior al-Shabaab figures in Kismayo and Barawa and conducted continuous combat operations throughout Kunar, Paktika, and Ghazni provinces in Afghanistan.

On the night of November 26, 2008, his joint fire team came under intense enemy fire during a raid on a Taliban commander. When insurgents attempted to use a tunnel inside the compound to outflank the assault force, Houston spotted the danger and personally led the high risk clearance. Wounded inside the tunnel, he continued to lead, secured the unit’s flank, and helped break up a Taliban bombing cell that night. For his actions he was awarded the Silver Star.

Almost three years later he was among the 15 Gold Squadron operators killed in a single moment when Extortion 17 was brought down while acting as a quick reaction force to assist Rangers under fire.

That night remains the costliest day in Naval Special Warfare history, and Houston’s loss removed one of the squadron’s most seasoned and effective operators.

She was failed by our health system and her children were failed by her.
