The way you eat sets the limit on how much fat you'll burn. 🧑🍳
The way you train sets the limit on how much fat you'll burn at high (competitive) power outputs. 🚶
You want both. 🔥
Almost 3 decades in coaching, & if I had to sum up what is truly *MOST* important [esp. in elite sport], it’s 2 things — BELIEF & HEALTH.
Belief fuels ambition. Health sustains performance.
Each reinforces the other.
This is the foundation for everything else
Please join me in cheering for coaching client @TheUltraGeezer in tomorrow’s @wser as he aims to be the oldest finisher in race history!

Most think of a "healthy diet" as less.
For serious athletes, a "healthy diet" often becomes about more.
There is nothing less healthy than trying to train at extreme energy deficits for a long period of time.

Never too old to get sponsored!! Proud of my dad...not only does he have an amazing sponsorship, but he's also running one of the most storied 100-milers in the US in a couple of months for it.
Important reminder for this time of year:
The fitness lags behind the work.
So, whether you're being diligent now or you're being a lazy git, you'll see the accompanying result in a month or 2 😊
How to play the long game:
Don’t worry about being the best. Worry about being the best at getting better.
Don’t aim to be consistently great. Aim to be great at being consistent.
Ignore hacks, trends, and fads. Focus on nailing the basics over and over again.
Sleep at night.
This also applies to just about everything.
Trying harder often = Forcing, tightening up.
Great performance often occurs when we have done the work, but let it happen. We stop forcing and allow our skill to take over.
Loved this recent article about my dad, @TheUltraGeezer! How does he go from a 100-miler race to a track championship the next week? 145+ marathons later... he just keeps showing up. Relentless and always optimistic!

One of the keys to elite performance is staying in the game long enough to allow your talent to fully express.
A rush to be great can often impede our development
Be patient
Focus on consistency over heroic efforts
Play the long game
Keep & develop the joy of the pursuit
Observation: the people who sustain success over the long-haul are rarely shooting for success. They are focused on the path. Their goal is mastery, which knows no end.
How do we achieve mastery, let’s take a look:
Why does too much of a focus on success backfire? 🧵👇
The best athletes learn to listen to their bodies. To understand what each feeling/sensation is communicating.
Any gadgets they use are meant to aid this process.
Amateurs often get this backward. They tune in to the gadget in place of their internal signals.
Proud of long term coaching client @HilaryShirazi! She nudged the quality of her training to a higher level (harder long runs, primarily), but, mostly, she hasn't dropped the ball. Consistency is THE magic bullet for year over year gains.
I didn't beat last year's overall mileages, but I did accomplish my 2021 goal!
🏃♀️Ran 2,295 miles (-31 miles y/y)
🚴♀️ Biked 486 miles (-282 miles y/y)
🏆 Completed 3 marathons (+1 y/y)
🏅 Set a new marathon PR (3:15:59)
Goal for 2022: Run two marathons <1 week apart
Good enough is usually good enough.
Good enough over and over again—that's how you get to great.
The culture loves heroic efforts.
Heroic efforts are how you burnout.
Great outcomes love consistency.
Consistency is how you play the long game.
Make consistency a practice:
In a Q&A interview, the world's fastest 70-year-old discusses Dykes training, injury, and his love of racing often. Plus, we spoke with his coach. https://t.co/5H35qoQyMJ
