Many Americans don’t know it, but the Constitution directly says people have rights that aren’t mentioned in the Constitution (9A).
The Founders wisely realized their own limitations and added flexibility. It’s today’s ideologues who (selectively) treat them as rigidly infallible
9A: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."
Doesn't mean everything not mentioned is a right (obv). But does mean that "it's not mentioned in the Constitution so it doesn't count" is BS.
Anyone who treats the Founders as unified, or the Constitution like a set of rigid instructions for everything, as if it's the word of God—and just so happens to agree with whatever 21st century ideologues want, natch—is wildly incorrect, and misses what made their work special.
The Founders didn't agree on much, besides independence from England. The Constitution is full of compromises and humility, with (paraphrasing) "if we didn't mention a right, that doesn't mean you don't have it" (9A) and "you'll probably have to makes some changes" (amendments).

(1) This is insane. (2) If the cops have no legal duty to help or protect the public then wtf is their point? (3) Their point is to generate revenue for the state and to protect businesses and capitalism, not to protect the public.
3 cops watched a man drown, and as his wife screamed at them to help, they threatened to arrest her. The man died in front of them.😓
A reminder that in 2005 SCOTUS ruled police have no legal duty to help or protect the public.
