It is a popular, extensively used drug that is off-patent and cheap, yielding little profit for pharma. Manufacturing capacity goes to Ozempic, Viagra, and biologicals, the real money makers. They are partly to blame. Hospital pharmacies should not draw up drugs in syringes for others to use. Safety means checking the label and dose before administering; any drug should be drawn up by the person who will give it. In my years as a nurse anesthetist, we often saw important drugs like atropine on back order. This is the real problem.
