Die Zeiten, in denen sich die EU hinter Ungarn verstecken konnte, sind vorbei. Péter Magyar hat das Veto gegen EU-Beitrittsgespräche mit der Ukraine aufgegeben und feiert sich gerade als der Mann, der in drei Wochen geschafft hat, woran Viktor Orbán zehn Jahre gescheitert ist.

Budapest und Kyjiw haben sich auf die Rechte der rund 100.000 ungarischen Minderheit in der Karpato-Ukraine geeinigt.

Die EU bereitet die Eröffnung des ersten Verhandlungspakets vor, von der Leyen will sie beim Europäischen Rat am 18./19. Juni besprechen. Die Schlagzeilen feiern. Reuters, Politico, FAZ – alle dasselbe Lied: Durchbruch.

Und ja, es ist einer. Magyar ist nicht Orbáns Mann, er ist nicht Moskaus Mann, und dass die ungarische Blockade nach Jahren weg ist, ist real.

Aber die Geschichte hat eine zweite Hälfte, die heute eher unter den Teppich gekehrt wird:

Magyar lehnt nämlich eine beschleunigte EU-Mitgliedschaft der Ukraine ausdrücklich ab.

Sein Statement gestern war glasklar: Das erste Verhandlungspaket macht er auf, eine Beschleunigung der Beitrittsgespräche „unterstützt” seine Regierung „nicht”. Heißt: prozedural ja, materiell nein. Das Paket geht auf, das Tempo bleibt das alte, Beitritt in irgendwann 10 Jahren, vielleicht.

Und hier kippt es. Denn Friedrich Merz hat im Grunde dasselbe gesagt. Ein Beitritt der Ukraine im Jahr 2027 sei „ausgeschlossen”. Der in Aussicht gestellte Beobachterstatus hin oder her. Auch in Paris, Brüssel und dem Rest der EU ist die Begeisterung für eine Sonderspur überschaubar.

Solange Orbán in Budapest saß, konnten Berlin und die EU-Kommission sich elegant hinter dem ungarischen Veto verstecken: „Wir würden ja, aber dieser Orbán …”

Jetzt ist Orbán weg. Magyar hat das Veto aufgegeben. Und plötzlich sieht man, dass der Bremsklotz nie nur in Budapest stand. Er stand in der ganzen EU.

Orbán war die laute Bremse.
Der Rest ist leise Unehrlichkeit.
Magyar hat nur den Vorhang weggezogen.

Das ist die eigentliche Nachricht von gestern, und sie steht in keiner Überschrift: Wer Kyjiw bremst, ist nicht ein einzelner Schurke. Es ist der Klub.

Nach mehr als vier Jahren Krieg, hunderttausenden Toten und Verwundeten, in einem Land, das täglich unter Raketen lebt – und Brüssel diskutiert im immer gleichen Tempo weiter über Pakete, Bedingungen, Reihenfolgen und in welchem Trio mit Moldau und Westbalkan die Aufnahme eigentlich gedacht ist.

Die Mitgliedschaft, sagt Außenminister Sybiha, sei für Kyjiw Teil einer Sicherheitsgarantie. Solange sie ausbleibt, bleibt auch die Garantie aus.

Aber die EU braucht weiter Zeit.
Und gestern hat sie sich dafür gefeiert.

Scandal brewing in “neutral” Ireland after revelations that one Russian-affiliated plant there has been supplying over 83% Irish exports of alumina to Russia where it’s smelted into aluminum, a critical component for war production.

Aughinish Alumina in County Limerick, Europe’s largest alumina refinery, owned by United Company Rusal (Russia’s largest aluminium producer), whose parent EN+ Group was founded by sanctioned oligarch Oleg Deripaska. An investigation by the Irish Times, OCCRP and other outlets, drawing on confidential documents, customs data and satellite imagery, established the supply chain.

The Irish government tried to deflect but when a reporter filmed the plant with signs in Russian, they could no longer deny it. Now internal documents were leaked showing that the company is threatening the Irish government with loss of jobs and all sorts of things if it tried to curb its exports to Russia.

The newest defense is that alumina isn’t under EU sanctions so technically no rules were broken. Except Ireland had no problem defying the EU and forging ahead with its own restrictions on imports from Israel with its Occupied Territories Bill. Because… reasons (or maybe Russian occupation of Ukraine is OK while Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands is not).

Australia stopped its alumina exports to Russia because the material is so necessary for the war (its main exporter was also 20%-owned by Deripaska). The neutral Irish government is operating under different standards, where morality is spelled in Russian.

I wonder what the Irish people, who overwhelmingly support Ukraine (in fact, they are among the strongest supporters in Europe when it comes to economic and financial aid), think about all of this.

Every second day a ship loaded with alumina leaves Limerick, Ireland to eventually end up in munitions raining down on Ukraine's civilians and soldiers.

More than 80 percent of the alumina produced in Ireland was shipped to Russia this year. Russia needs it for weapons systems used to kill Ukrainian children and families, as well as for weapons systems it is also directing against Europe. Perhaps Ireland should reconsider its lobbying efforts and propose adding aluminum to the EU’s next package of sanctions. Just as, incidentally, Russian uranium and fuel rods should have been sanctioned long ago, and Germany must enforce the sanctions so that no more German semiconductors or circuit boards end up in Russian drones. Close the loopholes and implement the sanctions without exception.
