When the lights had dimmed slightly in the 2006 NFL draft, the Baltimore Ravens picked one of the best punters to ever play the game.
With the 203rd pick, Nebraska punter Sam Koch was next up for the Ravens, filling the void left behind by the departing Dave Zastudil, who had joined the Browns.
Sam Koch became a legend in Baltimore, having spent some 16 seasons with the Ravens contributing in a whopping 256 games!
Koch was masterful, punting the Ravens out of danger on 1,168 occasions, totalling 52,868 yards, a career average of 45.3 yards per punt!
Sam was an efficient passer of the ball too, he went perfect in his career until his very final attempt which fell short. He was even thought the be the Ravens 3rd of 4th string emergency QB!
Specialists don’t usually get the respect they deserve in terms of honors, Sam Koch was only ever named to one Pro Bowl and one AP All Pro second team. But his most important achievement would be winning Super Bowl XLVII, and executing an intentional safety which all but secured the win!
After Sam closed out his 16 year NFL career, he agreed to stick around on the coaching staff to help Jordan Stout adjust to the NFL, who would go on to become one of the best punters in the league on his own accord.
One thing is for certain, there’ll never be another Sam Koch!
