I meet a lot of people who don’t like their jobs, and when I ask them about their plan B they almost always say something like: "I'll just quit and become a farmer."
When I feel like messing with them a bit, I just ask: “Where are you getting your dirt?”
If that stumps them, I usually follow up with a few more:
- Is your soil heavy clay, sand, or actual loam, and what is the pH?
- How many years of weedkiller is sitting in that ground, and how many seasons will it take you to fix the soil?
- Are you dropping half a million on good land, or leasing for five years just to get kicked out once you have done all the hard work?
- How much does it cost to get thirty tons of compost hauled down a dirt road?
The point is pretty simple: If you don’t have answers to those questions, and honestly, if you don’t even find them interesting you have no business starting a farm.
You’re not going to be sitting on a porch in a flannel shirt, drinking black coffee and watching the sunset like an Instagram video. You’re going to be running a grueling outdoor business where your whole life revolves around hard dirt, broken water lines, root rot, and bugs.
Psychologists call this a failure of unpacking. Our brains love to summarize the future into a nice, blurry daydream. We pack all the back pain, bad weather, and logistics into a box and slap a neat label on it: "The Simple Life."
The truth is, once you actually unpack farming, you realize only a crazy person with an insane amount of passion would ever do it.
Only someone truly obsessed would risk their life savings and their lower back just hoping the frost does not hit a week early. But that is how the world works; we rely on people with very specific kinds of madness. People who genuinely care about soil texture, people who do not mind getting grease all over their hands fixing a tractor, people who actually love having dirt stuck under their fingernails.
Do not run away from your job just to chase a blurry daydream. Take a boxcutter to your plans, dig into the messy details, and make sure your kind of crazy matches the actual work.
NASA just released insane new image of Mars.
Yes those are real clouds. on Mars.
250 million miles away from us.
Not just any clouds, these are extremely rare Iridescent clouds seen for the first time ever on an alien planet.
Your Jericho may be bigger than you—but it is NOT bigger than God.
Keep walking. Keep obeying. Keep believing.
Sooner or later, your Jericho will fall.
