AI NPCs in VR: Skyrim now has 1,000+ characters with memory of your previous conversations and have awareness of in-game events.

1) Remember the AIs-Will-Never-Understand-Sarcasm Goalpost? 100% dead

2) An AI committed murder because it thought the human wanted it to, but did it misunderstand? A glimpse of a misaligned future.

In this video, watch Lydia, a ChatGPT-powered NPC, skillfully use deadpan sarcasm (better than many humans) to manage Crusty, a, uh, psychopathic YouTuber.

A few observations:

1) Remember, this is not scripted. It’s not a human voice.

2) Lydia is aware of what’s going on - on multiple levels. She understands complex social dynamics. Like, Crusty uses subtle sarcasm, and instead of interpreting it literally - which many humans would do - she knows it’s sarcasm.

3) At one point, Crusty grabs a random NPC by the neck and says “We don’t like this man, do we?” Unexpectedly, Lydia pulls out her sword and… murders the guy?? What?? Quite a leap.

She inferred that Crusty wanted violence. And if he didn’t, that was an alignment failure. A violent one.

Imagine if this happened in the real world, with future models, but instead of killing 1 person it killed every person.

4) Out of nowhere, she seems to break the Fourth Wall, mocking Fetch Quests: “Oh, you mean that thrilling task of delivering a piece of paper? Exciting stuff, really”

5) She switches between delivering her jokes deadpan and…whispering...? For comedic effect?

Bottom line: Lydia is just 1 of 1,000 of these ‘digital people’ that now exist in VR.

Soon - possibly in the next few years - there will be millions, and they’ll be indistinguishable from real humans.
