من أجمل المنحوتات الصخرية وأعجبها في المملكة العربية السعودية، وهي في نظري أجمل من أي لوحة في المتاحف التي يصطفّ الناس أمامها في طوابير طويلة، وأحقّ بهذا الانتظار، وأبلغ من أي عمل فني معاصر، لولا أنها مختبئة في الصحراء.

مما يثير الإعجاب أن الفنان عبّر عن الإنسان بخطوط ورموز، بدلًا من محاولة محاكاة هيئته كما هي، وهذه جرأة كبيرة في التجريد والرؤية الفنية، رغم مرور آلاف السنين على نحتها في الصخر (بحسب إفادة صديق أكاديمي مختص، يُقدَّر عمر هذه المنحوتات المنفَّذة بتقنية النحت البارز بما لا يقل عن خمسة آلاف سنة).

تقع هذه المنحوتات في مكان مغمور وغير متوقَّع، ويَصعب ملاحظتها إلا عند الاقتراب منها كثيرًا. شكرًا للصديق أبو عبد الرحمن صالح الغفيلي الذي دلّني على هذا الموقع، وقد كنّا نتطلّع إلى الوصول إليها منذ أكثر من عام.

Among the most beautiful and remarkable rock carvings in Saudi Arabia. To my eye, they surpass any painting people queue for hours to see in museums, deserve that wait even more, and speak more powerfully than any contemporary artwork. Yet here they remain, hidden in the desert.

What fascinates me is how the artist expressed the human figure through lines and symbols rather than attempting a faithful likeness. There is extraordinary boldness in this abstraction and artistic vision, carved into the rock thousands of years ago. According to an academic friend who specializes in the field, these relief carvings are estimated to be at least 5,000 years old.

They lie in an obscure, unexpected location, easily overlooked unless you come very close.

Drop Site has now become a mouthpiece for Houthi aggression against civilians in Yemen.
Imagine reporting on Gaza by calling Palestinians defending their city “Iran-backed fighters trapped in an encircled city,” while presenting Israeli demands for surrender as generous offers of amnesty.

Would you call that journalism?

Drop Site built its reputation by exposing Israel’s crimes in Gaza. Yet when it comes to Yemen, you suddenly adopt the language of the aggressor.

The Houthis have besieged Taiz for years, shelled civilian neighborhoods, fired missiles and artillery, and terrorized its population. They are trying to force the people of Taiz into submission.

How is this different from the tactics you condemn in Gaza?

You cannot condemn Israel for besieging and bombing Palestinians while presenting the Houthis as peaceful people offering amnesty.
You have been given opportunities to hear the other side, yet you continue to give the Houthis a platform without seriously challenging their claims.

This is not journalism. This is propaganda dressed as journalism.
