🇯🇵 Pokémon planes, inside and out!!!
Here's a lighter topic. For the 30th anniversary of Pokémon, Japan's ANA is rolling out 3 special liveries.
The first 2 will be the Red Jet (Fire-type Pokémon) and the Green Jet (Grass-type Pokémon). The 3rd will be the Blue Jet and will be unveiled later.
In addition to the very unique design on the outside of the new planes, the inside of the cabin will also be Pokémon-themed: Pokémon headrest covers, Pokémon drink cups, and Pokémon napkins.
Passengers will also get commemorative Pokémon products and the chance to purchase original Pokémon goods onboard (details to be announced soon).
ANA (All Nippon Airways) has had previous Pokémon jets that were very popular, like EVA Air's famous Hello Kitty planes.
Now, you may be wondering how to find these aircraft if you're a true Pokémon fan.
The B787-9 Pökémon Jet Green will operate international routes. The launch date will be announced soon. ANA flies to Vancouver (YVR) and partners with Air Canada as a member of Star Alliance.
(💡That route is actually one of the best Aeroplan sweet spots: a low guaranteed fixed price of just 55,000 points for ANA's luxurious business class; it's worth thousands of dollars!)
The B787-9 Pokémon Jet Red will operate domestic routes starting in late July.
These are the routes that will sometimes be operated by aircraft number JA819A (until October; the winter schedule will be announced later).
To/From Tokyo-Haneda (HND):
-Osaka-Itami (ITM)
-Sapporo (CTS)
-Fukuoka (FUK)
-Okinawa (OKA)
-Nagasaki (NGS)
-Hiroshima (HIJ)
-Takamatsu (TAK)
-Miyako (MMY)
-Ishigaki (ISG)
-Hakodate (HKD)
-Matsuyama (MYJ)
-Kagoshima (KOJ)
To/From Osaka-Itami (ITM):
-Tokyo-Haneda (HND)
-Sapporo (CTS)
-Okinawa (OKA)
-Miyako (MMY)
-Ishigaki (ISG)
The B737-800 Pokémon Jet Blue will also operate domestic routes.

🇨🇦➡️🇺🇸 There was an INCREASE in Canadian travelers in the United States last month, for the 1st time in a very long time!
Indeed, after 15 consecutive months of decreases, there was a (very minor) increase of 1.4% in April 📈
(That's 62,000 Canadian travelers per day, a figure that's higher than many expect!)
That said, it's important to understand that this is Year-over-Year data, like almost all statistics (the former management consultant in me can absolutely confirm this)😅
So the April 2026 data is compared to that from April 2025. The number of travelers is therefore still incredibly down compared to before Trump's 2nd term 🍊
But the data for January, February, and March were all compared to 2025, too... and it was still down each month.
⚠️ This still doesn't mean the downward trend will slow. It could go back down again in May.
By the way, the Statistics Canada data also shows that Canadians are traveling just as much; they're just going elsewhere ✈️
And considering the cost of living in the United States, there are so many places that are more affordable, to travel for less (as long as you leave for a bit more time, to compensate for the slightly higher transportation costs to go somewhere else) 🙌
☀️ Too many travelers who don't have as much experience in Europe often don't know this and get a bad surprise.
(And no, it's not that everything is better in the East, with lower prices and fewer crowds; hopefully you know that, too! ☺️)

😦 Is this too extreme... or warranted?
Since May 1, the iconic Dutch city has indeed banned ads for flights, cars, and even meat in its public advertising spaces. This is to bring them in line with the city's climate objectives.
It's the first capital city in the world to enact such a policy.
This continues the Netherlands' crackdown on air travel; their leaders have consistently tried to reduce flights at the country's main airport (AMS), leading to higher prices and fewer options (for locals and for travelers who want to go spend money in the country).
Do you think banning airline ads is an effective strategy?
😔 It's not very high currently, thankfully (as are most things in that amazing part of the world).
Especially for us Canadians; we're used to having some of the world's highest taxes on flights 🇨🇦
Still, with the recent increase in jet fuel costs (maybe you've heard about it 😂), it's another layer of added cost to plane ticket prices.

🏎️ This cool free event *doesn't* require having an F1 ticket.
But it *does* require having a premium-level Amex card.
🥂 These cards are great for those who want to make their trips more enjoyable and who care about luxury. They offer plenty of travel benefits that are way more useful than this pop-up lounge (unlimited access to VIP airport lounges worldwide, elite status at 15,000+ hotels, etc.)!
But this is certainly a nice plus if you're in town.
I enjoyed my experience at the inaugural edition of this event (and at my many Amex House events in Miami). I'll be there again on one of the days this year.

⌛ Increased bonus until the end of the day on May 8.
It makes no sense to not be using shopping portals! It gives you free rewards; perfect for traveling for less.
Especially now with a $40 bonus in simple cashback.
Of course, this is VERY far from the $1000 in free travel that easy-to-get welcome bonuses give you (and by the way, since today, there's a new record-high offer on one of our favorite cards!!!)
But it's $40 on top of all the rest... and it's easy, and it's for everyone!

🤑 If you've ever been to Southeast Asia (one of the world's best regions), clearly you know AirAsia.
They often have flights for as low as C$50!!!
AirAsia is consistently voted one of the best ULCCs (ultra low-cost carriers) in the world. They already have a fleet of nearly 300 aircraft.
Now, they are pivoting significantly towards the very innovative Canadian-built A220.
Not only that, they will be the launch customer for the high-density 160-seat configuration.
The A220 is a modern jet that's smaller than the traditional single-aisle jets that dominate worldwide fleets, but that denser layout means it can carry almost as many passengers (but at a much lower cost).
The announcement yesterday, with PM Carney in attendance, includes 150 firm orders and options for 150 more. They are also publicly asking Airbus to go ahead with the long-rumored A220-500 variant (a 3rd variant that would be even bigger).
✈️ Why should travelers care about the A220?
It offers a great onboard experience; it has all the flyer-friendly features of newer plane models. But it also has wider seats and 50% fewer middle seats (rows of 5 seats instead of 6)!
It's also extremely efficient; it allows airlines to lower their costs. That opens up many new route possibilities, giving travelers more options.
As someone who loves Southeast Asia and cheap flights, this AirAsia order is particularly interesting.
I've had 24 flights on the A220 in the past 5 years (on 3 different airlines), and it is indeed a very fun plane to fly on.
Have you ever been on the Canadian-designed A220?
🪦🥀 One of the most profitable airlines before the pandemic, with US$297 million in profit per year on average for the 5 years before.
Very low costs were obviously the key to their ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC) model; I often paid US$40 roundtrip from Montreal's US airport (Plattsburgh) to Florida! 🤑
Spirit's low fares were even the inspiration for us to launch Flytrippers 9 years ago to help you travel for less!!!
They brought the ULCC model to North America, pushing fares down to the lowest they've ever been in History (relative to the cost of living). Which many take for granted. Even if you don't fly ULCCs, you need them as they force bigger airlines to keep prices lower.
In 2011, I took the first of my 80+ ULCC flights. It was on Spirit. I flown them 30 times from 2011 to 2018, almost always for less than $100.
(Since, I've launched Flytrippers and no longer work in consulting, so I have more time to travel further; that's obviously the trick to travel for infinitely less, when you choose affordable countries... NOT Western Europe like everyone always does😅)
😔 Spirit never recovered from the insane increase in costs and the inflation caused by the governments' responses to the pandemic.
Now, their 130+ planes are grounded, tens of thousands of passengers are stranded, and thousands of employees are out of work 〽️
They had asked the Trump government for an emergency US$500 million loan to get through the current jet fuel crisis (the cost has DOUBLED since the Iran conflict), but that fell apart.
Have you ever flown Spirit Airlines?
Believe it or not, it's NOT about cramming more people onto planes anymore (according to the creator).
We've got more pictures and details from the unveiling this week.

Or rather more *context* about these 2 topics we receive a lot of questions about.
Getting a $3000+ lie-flat pod seat for 25 hours is possible with just 73,000 RBC Avion points (that's how I booked, and it's amazing)!
Flying through the Middle East is completely fine now for many routes (although the flight disruptions could return, of course)!
