📚 Weekly Academic Activity (GI & General Surgery)

Rich discussions on approach, red flags, and management pearls in primary care & emergency settings.

Presented by: Dr Fatimah Alawami, Dr Ammar Almansour.
Supervised by: Dr Mohammed Ghazal.

Clinical Pearls:
- UGI bleeding can present with hematochezia if brisk → don’t assume lower source
- A “reducible” hernia today can still strangulate tomorrow → elective repair timing matters
- Pain lasting >6 hours or with fever → think cholecystitis, not simple colic
- Normal lipase does not fully exclude early pancreatitis if presentation is <6–12 hrs
- SBO: Prior surgery = adhesions most common cause, but never miss malignancy in first presentation
