The relationships closest to us can either restore our energy or drain it. Are we giving them the attention they deserve? During the panel on “Building Strong Families Across Generations,"
Dr. Evas Kansiime Atwine, CEO, Clinical Psychologist and Marriage & Parenting Therapist, explored the powerful connection between relationships, safety, wellbeing and energy.
Key Highlights:
*Relationships fuel wellbeing: healthy relationships provide emotional and psychological energy.
*Safety matters: strong families create spaces where people feel safe, secure and heard.
*Prioritise essential relationships: spouses, children and family have a direct impact on our wellbeing and ability to function.
*Be intentional: relationships need consistent time, attention, communication and care.
*Invest where it matters most: don’t spend all your energy on less important relationships while neglecting those closest to you.
*Strong doesn’t mean perfect: a healthy family is built on connection, trust, communication and intentional effort.

'What makes a family truly strong? It’s not the size of the house, the wealth you have, or how perfect everything looks from the outside. It’s how safe people feel when they come home.'

“A good investment is more than its return.”
It is about what remains after fees, taxes and inflation. It is about the risks you take, how easily you can access your money, and whether the investment fits into your broader financial goals.
Speaking at the 31st ICPAU Annual Seminar, CPA Robert Katuntu, CFA, Chief Investment Officer, Alpha Asset Managers Limited, challenged participants to look beyond headline returns and think about investment as part of a wider wealth operating system, one built for sustainability, compliance, resilience and generational wealth.

During his session, CPA Robert Katuntu, CFA, Chief Investment Officer, Alpha Asset Managers Limited, challenged participants to rethink wealth, not simply as a collection of assets, but as a system that must be intentionally built, governed, protected and passed on.
Takeaways:
➖A good investment should be assessed by its net real return, risk-adjusted return, liquidity, portfolio fit, structure and governance, as well as its suitability and outlook.
➖The presentation outlined seven essential controls: Purpose & Goals, Cash Flow, Protection, Investment, Compliance, Retirement, and Estate planning. Together, these controls create a framework for wealth that can withstand shocks and remain useful across generations.
➖From overconfidence and confirmation bias to loss aversion, fear, envy, regret and inertia, behavioural biases can significantly influence investment decisions.
➖Diversification is more than owning several assets True diversification means holding assets that respond differently to the same shock.
➖Before committing capital, investors should ask: Who regulates the provider? Whose name is on the asset? What are the risks? How liquid is the investment? Is performance independently evidenced? Are there conflicts of interest? Can the records be retrieved?
➖A retirement plan should quantify the desired lifestyle, future income needs, capital gap, contribution rate and potential risks—including longevity, health costs and weaker-than-expected returns.
➖Wealth should not depend entirely on one person.

"A high performer is not automatically a future leader."
That distinction took centre stage as CPA @KamulegeyaUg , Business Leader and Social Entrepreneur, unpacked strategic talent management at the 31st Annual Seminar.
He urged leaders to deliberately identify high-potential talent, create the right environment for them to thrive and, importantly, prepare them for leadership before placing them in positions of responsibility.

"What gets measured gets attention. But how you deliver it matters just as much".
At the 31st Annual Seminar, Ms. Marsha Nyonyozi , Chief of People and Culture Transformation, dfcu Bank, shared how organisations can make values and behaviours part of everyday performance, not just words on a wall.
From linking customer service to individual performance scores, to placing employees in branches and call centres so they experience customer challenges firsthand, she demonstrated how talent management can move from policy to practice.
Her approach puts the customer at the centre: understand the need, solve the problem and measure not only what was achieved, but how it was achieved.

Ms. Rita Akot Apell, Chief Information Officer, Stanbic Bank Uganda, took participants into the evolving world of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation for Institutional and Personal Growth, at the 31st ICPAU Annual Seminar.
She explored the opportunities AI presents within the accounting space, particularly in simplifying routine, rule-based tasks and creating greater value. But beyond adoption, she highlighted an emerging opportunity for the profession: AI assurance and the role accountants can play in understanding how AI systems are built, governed and used.
She also brought the conversation back to the foundation, data.
Protecting customer information, complying with data protection requirements, assessing risks before deployment and establishing strong data governance are critical as organisations integrate AI into their operations.
Additionally, she emphasised the importance of engaging regulators early, particularly when introducing new technologies, while ensuring that policies, standards, controls and risk frameworks evolve alongside them.

Prof. Engineer Bainomugisha, College of Computing and Information Sciences, Makerere University, unpacked what Artificial Intelligence means for professionals, institutions and the future of work at the 31st ICPAU Annual Seminar.
Here are some of the key points from his session:
-Generative AI has changed the conversation, tools can now generate text, images, videos and more, making AI accessible to a much wider audience.
-We need AI creators and universities must continue developing the technical talent capable of building and advancing AI technologies.
-We also need AI users and professionals across accountancy, banking, business and other fields need the skills to use AI effectively in their work.
-You do not have to be a technical expert or AI developer. Understanding the basics and knowing how to apply AI effectively is increasingly important.
-Technology alone does not create transformation, institutions need people with the right skills to turn technology into meaningful results.

Speaking at the 14th CPA Economic Forum, CPA Josephine Okui Ossiya, CEO of the Capital Markets Authority, shared key lessons Uganda can draw from other economies while strengthening its own capital market.
Key highlights from her presentation:
✔️Sustainable economic growth requires a strong, inclusive, and resilient capital market.
✔️Uganda can learn from countries like Nigeria by fostering financial innovation and developing new capital market products, while avoiding policies that distort price discovery.
✔️Prudent borrowing is essential to safeguard economic stability and avoid crowding out private sector investment.
✔️Regulatory certainty is critical to attracting and retaining investor confidence.
✔️Long-term economic transformation will be driven by a private sector-led economy, supported by efficient and well-functioning capital markets.
✔️Uganda should prioritise mobilising domestic resources to finance development while carefully managing foreign borrowing.
"Government cannot achieve economic transformation alone. A thriving private sector, supported by strong capital markets, is essential for sustainable growth."
