Ruben Amorim: Unlucky or Unsustainable

It's often said this season Amorim had good underlying metrics

This may be true to an extent but it's not the full story. High shots, lower shots conceded and good xG.

Question is, if it was so good why did that not translate to success?

🗣️ “Against Fulham, Cunha dribbled into the box and was fouled. The referee immediately pointed to the spot and we started celebrating.

Then the Fulham players surrounded the referee and protested. VAR checked it and ruled the foul was outside the box, so the penalty was changed to a free-kick.

I looked at Cunha and thought, ‘They’ve just made all your hard work pointless.’

Adam Wharton - Channel Defending

-We have discussed a lot about Wharton's on ball upside but I think people tend to ignore his off-ball positioning and intelligence.
-For starters, he is among the top 15 best channel defenders among midfielders in the PL. This among players like Anderson, Garner, Tonali etc.
-60% tackling accuracy inside the pockets puts him among the best in that facet.
-Really good at recovering balls in these areas as well.
-The only real downside is his aerial ability.

Players with less mins look a bit better

Fwd pass% is forward pass completion %

Whenever Mainoo plays forward it'll mostly be short tidy passes so his completion would be higher

But yes it's important to contextualise the radars
