AN OPEN LETTER TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THE FIRST LADY OF NIGERIA
Your Excellencies, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the First Lady @SenRemiTinubu, @officialABAT@NGRPresident,
I write to you with utmost respect and a deep sense of urgency as a concerned student of Obafemi Awolowo University to draw your attention to the pressing challenges currently affecting students and academic life within the institution.
Last year, the First Lady donated CNG buses and electric motorcycles to the university. The students welcomed this in good faith, believing it would improve transportation and reduce the existing challenges on campus.
However, after the commissioning of these buses, the school management removed the previous transport system, including motorcycles and the commercial buses that students relied on daily.
Over 35,000 students are now dependent on a limited number of CNG buses and a few tricycles. This has led to long queues every morning and evening, overcrowded buses where four students are forced into spaces meant for three, and delays that affect lectures and academic activities.
Students now spend more to move around. Routes that were once direct have been broken into multiple stages, forcing students to pay more for less convenience. The ticket system that was introduced has also failed to remain consistent, with students paying multiple tickets for single trips.
Movement within campus has become stressful. Areas that were once easily accessible are now difficult to reach. What used to be a simple daily routine has become a burden.
The students consulted. The students engaged.
When nothing changed, the students, through the Students’ Union, declared a 72-hour lecture boycott to push for solutions. Despite this, the management maintained that the situation was only a “teething phase” and insisted the system would stabilise.
The problems persisted.
Frustration continued to build.
Eventually, the students took to peaceful protest, coming out en masse to express their displeasure and demand change.
Now, instead of addressing these concerns, the students are being asked to vacate their hostels in the 5th week of the semester. This comes right after the protest, raising serious concerns about the timing and intention behind the decision.
Is this a response to student welfare or a move to disperse students and weaken their ability to organise?
This is a federal university. The students are citizens of this country. They deserve better.
Motorcycles are not a backward means of transportation. They are practical, flexible, and efficient, especially in a campus environment. Removing them without providing a truly effective alternative is not progress, it is regression.
The students are the largest stakeholders in this institution, yet their voices continue to be ignored.
We ask:
Are you aware of this situation?
Do you consider this acceptable?
And if not, what steps are you taking?
We call on the Federal Government and the Office of the First Lady to intervene and ensure that student welfare is not sacrificed.
The students are being oppressed and we ask you and the general public to come to our aid

I attended the Barco Show / Náutico da Bahia Congress 2025 in Salvador, an event focused on the relationship between the sea, the port, and the development of tourism in Bahia. One of the key points presented was the plan to create new tourist attractions along the waterfront to attract more visitors and strengthen the local maritime sector.
The presentations highlighted:
The historical and cultural importance of the port. How the sea continues to shape the city’s daily life
Sustainability and innovation in port operations
Insights from professionals in civil engineering, foreign trade, and Brazilian Customs
I also took note of several personal questions and reflections that I wrote down for my own understanding and interest, such as:
How marketing strategies can be used to promote nautical tourism
How organizations measure the success of tourism initiatives
Which attractions in the region are most important to promote
What is needed to create a strong and positive organizational culture
How to ethically value local professionals “prata da casa
Another interesting point from the event was the explanation that products seized without proper labeling cannot return to the market. Instead, they are donated to volunteer groups to support local communities. Overall, the congress reinforced how Bahia’s identity and future are deeply connected to the sea, and how investing in the waterfront can open new opportunities for tourism, culture, and community development.
As apresentações destacaram:
A importância histórica e cultural do porto
👋 It’s been a while since my last post! I’m back here to share more about my journey as a language student, graphic designer, and virtual assistant.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the XXIV Brazilian Conference of French Teachers (XXIV Congrès Brésilien des Professeurs de Français) held at UFBA, Salvador 🇧🇷.
It was an inspiring week full of learning, cultural exchange, and networking with amazing educators from across Brazil and beyond!
I’m looking forward to sharing more insights, visuals, and projects related to languages, design, and productivity. Stay tuned!

According to him, although the meetings did not fully resolve all issues, the union recognized that significant progress had been made compared to the pre-strike period.
He said, “We have not achieved all our objectives, but we are certainly not where we were before the strike began. This shows that had the government responded earlier, there would have been no need for the action.”
Piwuna also commended the intervention of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, and Labour, as well as the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, whose mediation, he said, had rekindled hope for a lasting resolution.
He stated that the National Executive Council ,NEC of ASUU, after an emergency meeting held from October 21–22, 2025, reviewed the situation and concluded that the warning strike had achieved part of its purpose ,particularly in compelling the government to return to the negotiation table.
While noting that more work remains to be done, NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to allow for a conducive atmosphere for further engagement,” Piwuna announced.

OAU Students Demand Action Amid Surge in Off-Campus Crimes
By Testimony Jesutofunmi @TestimonyJesut1
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) students in Ile-Ife, Osun State, are grappling with an alarming wave of targeted robberies, kidnappings, rapes, and assaults in off-campus areas such as Moremi Estate, Omole, and Mayfair. According to reports from May and October 2025, over 30 incidents have occurred in recent weeks, leaving students hospitalized, vehicles stolen, phones and gadgets taken, and bank accounts drained. Despite repeated reports to the Nigerian Police, no arrests have been made, nor has any property been recovered, highlighting a profound failure of local authorities to ensure the safety of OAU's student population. The slogan "OAU Students' Lives Matter" has become a rallying cry for students demanding dignity and security.
Unlike the indigenous residents of these areas, who appear largely spared from these crimes, students face relentless targeting and severe beatings, with incidents of robbery pointing to systemic neglect of their transient population. The absence of basic infrastructure exacerbates this crisis. Unlit streets, bad roads, and unsecured bushy exits provide fertile ground for criminals, while students are forced to fund vigilante groups and their ammunition out of pocket and form patrols to protect themselves. This is an unacceptable burden on young Nigerians pursuing education.
The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees fundamental rights that are under threat in Ile-Ife. Section 33 enshrines the right to life, yet students live in fear of violent attacks. Section 34 upholds the right to dignity, which is violated by the constant threat of assault, attempted kidnapping, and rape in nearby bushes. Furthermore, Section 40 protects the right to peaceful assembly and association, empowering students to demand accountability from their elected representatives and the Osun State Government. These constitutional protections compel the Osun State Government to act swiftly to safeguard lives and property.
The OAU student community is calling on the Honourable representing the Ife Central Constituency and the Osun State Government, led by Governor Ademola Adeleke, to urgently address this crisis. Specific demands include the installation of streetlights, repair of dilapidated roads, securing estate entrances and exits, and deploying Amotekun corps for enhanced patrols. The state’s monthly security votes, allocated to the governor as Chief Security Officer, must be channeled to protect vulnerable students, as mandated by the constitutional duty to ensure public safety. This is not merely a local issue but a national disgrace. The lives and properties of students living off-campus matter, and the failure to protect them undermines Nigeria’s commitment to education and youth development.
Students have already petitioned key figures, including the Ooni of Ife, and are prepared to escalate through legal avenues, such as Fundamental Rights suits under Section 46 of the Constitution, if our cries go unheard. The time for promises is over; OAU students demand tangible development and security now. We urge the public, civil society, and media to amplify our plight. The Osun State Government and federal representatives, the Ooni of Ife, the Ogunsua of Modakeke, and concerned bodies must act to restore safety and dignity to OAU’s students. Great Ife will not be silenced until justice is served.
