DEAR 2026: SANWO-OLU, FIRST LADY RECEIVE SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD
… As Lagos State Ministry of Information Toastmasters Bags Select Distinguish Club Award
It was a gathering of the finest communicators and leaders at the annual Division Excellence and Award Recognitions (DEAR 2026) - an initiative of Toastmasters Nigeria Division D District 130 to honour outstanding Toastmasters and Clubs who distinguished themselves in the outgoing Toastmasters year.
In his goodwill message at the event, held at the Shell Hall Muson Centre on Saturday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu stated that Toastmasters Nigeria, Division D, District 130 does not merely celebrate its members, it affirms a conviction that words, shaped with discipline, delivered with purpose, remain among the most transformative forces available to any society,
"I am pleased to convey the warmest congratulations of the Lagos State Government to the Toastmasters Nigeria family and to every individual being honoured at this year’s Division Excellence Awards and Recognitions. Your achievements represent far more than personal milestones. They represent the cultivation of a rare and essential capacity, the ability to communicate clearly, lead confidently, and inspire others to do the same," he said.
Mr. Governor, represented by the Director of Strategy Centre, Lagos State Ministry of Information & Strategy, Mr. Wale Akodu, added that the State Government understands that governing a megacity of over 20 million people, from diverse tongues, traditions, and aspirations, demands more than just policy design and infrastructure delivery. It demands communication that builds trust, bridges divides, and moves communities to collective action.
"In that sense, what Toastmasters teaches is not merely a professional skill. It is a civic one. Our administration has remained committed to the development of human capital alongside physical infrastructure. We believe that the quality of Lagos’ future will be determined, in no small measure, by the quality of the voices that shape its conversations, in boardrooms, on platforms, in communities, and in the halls of government. Therefore, the men and women being recognised are evidence that this investment in people yields extraordinary returns," he stated.
On her part, the Special Guest of Honour and First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Claudiana Sanwo-Olu, speaking through Mrs. Oyindamola Ogunsanwo, a member of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), noted that DEAR 2026 provides an opportunity for individuals to build on the success recorded and become better communicators, adding that the Toastmasters platform over the years has helped people develop effective communication skills while reiterating that the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu continues to place a premium on human capital development.
While formally welcoming Toastmasters and guests to DEAR 2026, Division D Director, DTM Abubakar Gimba, said that when this mandate began, the objective was simple: they wanted people to be better communicators. Hence, the event is a celebration of excellence, saying "We appreciate every leader who contributed in no small measure to the success recorded."
The high point of DEAR 2026 was the special recognition awards presented to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and the First Lady, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, just as the Lagos Ministry of Information Toastmasters Club bagged the Select Distinguished Club Award - a feat achieved less than a year after its establishment.
The spectacular night also featured dance performances, speech presentations, networking opportunities as well as intellectually stimulating games, among others.

CLIMATE CHANGE: LASG CALLS FOR STRONGER COALITIONS BETWEEN VULNERABLE CITIES, GLOBAL INSTITUTIONS
The Lagos State Government on Friday called for stronger and genuine coalitions between vulnerable cities and global institutions to address real-life issues related to climate change and global warming.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab made the call while speaking as a panellist on “Protecting Rights in the Face of Sea Level Rise” at the 2nd Berlin Climate Mobility Forum 2026, held in Berlin, Germany.
In his words: “The West must show more than rhetoric but a strong commitment to climate funding and not just for coastal cities but the Global South to address real-life issues around climate change and global warming, financing and the flow of financing matters”.
Wahab added that there must also be wholesome coalitions, localised climate finance, technology transfer and direct partnership between vulnerable cities and global institutions.
He stated that the international community must also facilitate technology transfer for flood modelling and coastal engineering, whilst also supporting knowledge exchange between vulnerable cities.
Speaking further alongside a panel consisting of the Prime Minister of Saints Kitts and Nevis, H.E. Dr Terrance Drew; Vice President of the Republic of Maldives, H.E. Uz Hussain Mohammed Lateef; Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability of Ghana, Mr. Seidu Issifu; Permanent Representative of Cabo Verde to the UN Declaration on Sea level rise, H.E Tania Serafim Romualdo and Mayor of Livorno, Hon Luca Salvetti, the Commissioner emphasised that climate crisis does not respect borders and all coastal cities across the globe share a common and existential threat.
He stressed that the international community must be ready to invest in resilient infrastructure that protects lives and livelihoods, as Lagos is ready to lead but can not do it alone.

LASG DECLARES ZERO TOLERANCE FOR WASTE DUMPING ON LAGOS ROADS, SET TO ESTABLISH WASTE POLIC
The Lagos State Government has declared zero tolerance for waste dumping on all roads across the State and is set to establish a "Waste Police" to support environmental sanitation efforts.
The decision followed the directive of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for the emergency evacuation of waste on Lagos roads.
Consequently, the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in collaboration with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), have resolved to ensure that roads, motor parks and garages remain clean at all times.
Speaking at a meeting held at the Ministry of Transportation on Saturday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said transport unions must ensure that their parks and garages are always kept clean and discourage indiscriminate trading and improper waste disposal within their areas of operation.
He stated that the Ministry would commence enforcement activities to ensure that all motor parks and garages are properly maintained and that waste is disposed of appropriately.
Reiterating that roads are not refuse dumps, the Commissioner further disclosed that the State Government would constitute a Waste Police made up of members of the transport unions across all local government areas. According to him, the Waste Police will monitor motor parks and their surroundings to ensure that refuse is not indiscriminately dumped.
The Lagos State Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Sam Egube noted that all over the world, road transport operators partner with governments in monitoring transport infrastructure. He urged all parties present at the meeting to rise to the clarion call of ensuring the challenge of waste disposal is surmounted.
Hon. Sola Giwa, who was also present at the meeting, urged NURTW and RTEAN to take full responsibility as partners in waste control and management by ensuring total compliance at their various parks and garages.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, appreciated the transport unions for supporting the reintroduced environmental sanitation exercise and urged them to continue backing the initiative.
He noted that waste management cannot be handled by LAWMA alone, which is why the Agency is partnering with the transport unions whose members are spread across the State and can help promote proper waste disposal practices at motor parks and their surroundings.
Dr. Gbadegesin disclosed that LAWMA evacuates about 13,000 tons of waste daily across Lagos, while the transport unions move an estimated 22 million commuters every day. He stressed the need for collaboration between LAWMA and the unions to ensure proper waste disposal at motor parks and garages, while also discouraging indiscriminate trading in their parks and corridors.
He reiterated that LAWMA would continue to work closely with the unions, leveraging their presence across the State to monitor roads, motor parks and surrounding communities, urging them to report cases of indiscriminate waste disposal for prompt action.
