Not everyone was able to amass a significant pot as most have just managed on very low incomes as mist pensioners didn't benefit or only marginally benefitted from compulsory pension schemes and there are those who would remove even that right if elected 🤬🤬🤬

And there you have it even in a rent /mortgage free household council tax water rates gas and electric take around £4,500 of a pension a small private pension is fully taxed as a result of fiscal drag. Many pensioners are required to exist not live as they did before retirement

Its getting tiresome hearing all manner of tweeters and commentators asking how you are supposed to live on £12,548 a year as a pension.

The short answer is "You aren't"

In the UK there are three pillars of pension provision.

The State Pension is the first pillar and the foundation of your future retirement income.

The second pillar is contributing to an employer pension which is often matched or better and is tax advantaged.

The third pillar is any additional personal provision you make during your lifetime including ISAs, SIPPs and other investments.

🚨 The Times says Burnham must have the courage to admit that the facts have changed.

Agreed. But why must that courage be directed only at pensioners, benefit recipients and public spending and never at Brexit?

The article itself identifies weak growth, high energy costs, tighter labour supply and political instability as central problems. Yet its answer is to cut transfers while preserving the Brexit barriers suppressing trade, investment, productivity and tax receipts.

🇨🇦 Canada, under Mark Carney, is responding to economic coercion by diversifying its alliances and moving closer to Europe. Britain 🇬🇧 is pleading for selective access to European markets while refusing to reconsider the red lines that exclude us.

Britain cannot cut its way out of a growth crisis while voluntarily obstructing trade with its largest market.

If Burnham really has the guts to face the facts, the first promise he should reconsider is not the state pension.

It is Brexit.
