Our fire crews completed the final fire readiness review of the season in Bridgeport, California this week. These training opportunities are designed to promote teamwork and cohesiveness in all phases of fire response.
Thank you to the Air Attack teams who help make aerial firefighting possible. Their coordination, communication, and leadership over an incident help ensure aircraft like ours can operate safely and effectively in support of firefighters on the ground.

The private side of wildfire: On Today’s Show:
Today, I talk to Derrick Holdstock, owner and operator of Western Fire Resources. Derrick has been very proactive in the contracting and wildfire world, recently returning from a trip to D.C.
Before he started Western Fire Resources, Derrick was a wildlife biologist who practiced prescribed fire and later served as the Regional Fire Coordinator for West Texas, covering one third of the state. He also worked as a biologist for the Bureau of Land Management before venturing into the contracting world.
Derrick is highly versed in everything related to wildfire and the industry. We talk about current issues in contracting, policy, starting a company, the stereotypes, and a lot more.

SANTA FE NATIONAL FOREST ENTERS STAGE I FIRE RESTRICTIONS
Due to elevated wildfire risk, the Santa Fe National Forest will implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions forest-wide beginning today, April 2, 2026, through September 30, 2026.
The decision to implement fire restrictions is based on various factors, including the availability of firefighting resources, current drought conditions, weather forecast, the time of year, and fuel moisture levels. Implementing fire restrictions can help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public health and safety.

A day on the fireline with a dozer operator, where fire meets steel.
Ride along with us as we cut fireline in sagebrush on last year’s Striker Fire near Boise, Idaho.
Building fireline with a 60,000-pound machine means navigating lava fields, avoiding buried pipelines, and protecting sensitive ecosystems, all while supporting suppression operations.
Dozers are heavy equipment adapted for wildland firefighting. Varying in size and maneuverability, they are highly effective at constructing fireline across terrain ranging from sagebrush to steep, mountainous landscapes.
The 2026 Core Components Module Package for RT-130, Wildland Fire Safety Training Annual Refresher (WFSTAR) and the 2025 Fire Year in Review are now available on the NWCG website.
