Maurice Kamto Criticizes Anglophone Elites and Revives Federalism Debate
During an ongoing press conference in Yaoundé, Professor Maurice Kamto accused certain Anglophone elites of not genuinely advocating, in his view, for the interests of populations in the North-West and South-West regions, which have been affected by an armed conflict for several years.
The national president of the CRM denounced attempts to place political responsibility for the Anglophone crisis on him, stating that he had repeatedly drawn the attention of elites from those regions to the seriousness of the situation. He said he expected them, regardless of political affiliation, to unite and pressure the government to bring the conflict to an end.
Maurice Kamto also referred to a historical precedent, recalling the constitutional referendum of May 20, 1972, organized under President Ahmadou Ahidjo, which ended the federal system and established a unitary state — a reform that received broad approval, including in the Anglophone regions.
The opposition figure further recalled his 2020 decision to boycott the legislative and municipal elections, arguing that populations in the Anglophone regions were unable to participate normally due to persistent insecurity. He said the move was intended to prevent those citizens from being excluded from national political life while calling for the Anglophone crisis to become a central political priority.
Finally, Maurice Kamto reiterated his support for a return to federalism, which he considers a solution that would allow the North-West and South-West regions greater self-governance, a condition he believes necessary for the country’s stability and development.
