On the most recent Q&A episode of Open Book I was asked what the best nonfiction books on World War II are? Here’s my list. 👇🏼
Rick Atkinson’s trilogy on the battles are fantastic.
But my all-time favorite is Nigel Hamilton’s series on FDR.
Commander in Chief and War and Peace in particular.
And anything James Holland ( @James1940 ) has written on World War II.
He also has a new book coming out called The Visionaries — about the post-war construction that FDR and Truman led, and he will be on Open Book to discuss it.
Atkinson. Hamilton. Holland. Start there.

@JV_F1 So pleased for you and the whole team. I have followed the fortunes of the Williams team since the days of Alan Jones. So many good times and so many not so good. Today is right up there with the best though! 👍😎
@MrJamesMay Love to see the #WeHaveWaysFest badge on there. Really enjoyed your talk this year and also last year. Hope you come to number 5 next year!
What another fantastic weekend at the @WeHaveWaysPod WHWF4. My heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in the organisation and all the presenters. Most of all thanks to @almurray and @James1940 for staring us all of on this WW2 historical odyssey. Can’t wait for WHWF5!
@SteveArchibald8 Fantastic memories of being unable to stand up straight on the shelf because we were so tightly packed in. Just moved with the crowd and when Robbo scored it was pandemonium!
