France, the US, and the Wagner Group have all played significant roles in the Sahel conflict. In 2013, Operation Barkhane was created to combat extremist groups in Mali and NIger but diplomatic tensions and opposition led to the mission's termination in 2022.

For 20 years, the Sahel has become a major security threat due to weak control over borders. Facing terrorism,coups and trafficking, the extremist groups, including AQIM and ISGS, have turned the Sahel into a hub for terrorism and instability.

In 2012,UN special forces managed to push back M-23 rebel forces from the Congolese city of Goma. More than 10 years later, the rebel militia has managed to make advancements in the North Kivu region, and is close to finally getting a hold of the city.

Local and international cooperation initiatives aiming to achieve peace in the Sahel include: the G-5 Sahel, AU and ECOWAS initiatives, MINUSMA, UNISS, the Barkhane operation and the International Coalition for the Sahel.

The main actors involved in the DRC conflict are the FDLR, the CNRD, FARDC, ADF, NALU, MONUSCO, the Mai-Mai groups, APCLS, RCD, CNDP and the M-23 rebel movement.

Climate change within the Sahel Region indirectly contributes to increase criminal and terrorist groups's political power through the exacerbation of fights over resources.

Non-state actors of the Sahel conflict such as JNIM or IS Sahel are mainly funded through illicit economies and criminal activity.
Additionally to national military budgets, Sahel states are funded through external contributions from states like the US or France.

Which is the current situation in the DRC? Conflict persists in Eastern DRC, causing a major displacement crisis with 6.9 million people displaced. Over 120 armed groups, including M23 and the ADF, continue to operate, escalating violence and human rights abuses.

Has positive or negative peace been reached in the DRC or the Sahel? Neither negative nor positive peace has been achieved in this territories. Both regions face ongoing violence, weak governance, corruption, poverty, and inequalities in both regions.

What local and international cooperation initiatives have been taken to achieve peace in the DRC? Key local initiatives include the Nairobi Process and the Addis Ababa Peace Framework. International efforts include the UN’s MONUSCO peacekeeping mission.
