• It slashes energy use dramatically: every 10% increase in cullet reduces furnace energy needs by ~2.5–3%, and melting 100% cullet can cut energy by up to ~40% compared to virgin production.

• CO₂ emissions drop significantly—studies show ~580–670 kg saved per tonne of recycled glass (cradle-to-cradle), with up to 58–60% reduction when using high cullet percentages.

• Fewer raw material extractions mean less mining impact and habitat disruption.

The key to unlocking glass's full potential is clean, color-sorted collection. Mixed colors or contamination (from curbside debris, ceramics, or other recyclables) often downgrades glass to lower-value uses like fiberglass insulation or road aggregate instead of bottle-to-bottle recycling. Proper sorting—by color and purity—keeps it in the premium loop.

By improving recycling habits (rinsing containers, separating by color where possible, and supporting deposit-return systems), we can maximize glass's role in a true circular economy. It's one of the few packaging options that genuinely protects resources long-term—let's not sacrifice it for cheaper, disposable alternatives that harm the planet.

In yet another Orwellian move, the Government announced in a green paper this week that it wants to decide what news people can and cannot see, with plans to push approved outlets to the top of social media feeds.

Ministers should not be deciding which news sources the public read — especially in an era when three-quarters of under-25s say they get their news from social media.

As written in The Times, “In a state-sponsored ­regime in which inconvenient news was pushed out of view, would the grooming gangs scandal or the excesses of transgender ideology ever have come to light? You shouldn’t choose to trust ­everything you read online; but you shouldn’t trust the state to make the choice for you, either”.

Yesterday the convent and the burial place of Saint Patrick himself in Downpatrick was reduced to ashes.

Every single part of penrhos is Important , yes we know the land has been poorly managed for over 15 yrs and some invasive species that should have been managed have taken over certain areas we know we have English bluebells ,hybrid and Spanish
That too should have been managed by the previous owners but they didn’t care about the flora and fauna they only cared about making £££ seems they only want to make money at the detriment of penrhos and the local community they promise jobs but 15 yrs on there are still no jobs! As Penrhos was sold to a subsidiary of the 79th group who then went into administration after an alleged fraud , the administrators only want to make money back off this purchase to pay back creditors

But it’s the beautiful flora and fauna that will lose, they will lose their homes and many their lives !13 of 14 bat roosts to be removed but they will put up bat boxes in mitigation , red squirrels will be displaced “you must have licences to move the endangered ones and protected ones” Why ? Why are they moving them ? For a few to profit ! For a tourist holiday village which isn’t needed ! but what of the rare and common plants,the trees that will be destroyed ? insects,the bees butterflies, the larvae, the fungi the birds resident and migrants All will be affected !

They came for whole milk. We got skimmed, the cream stripped out and sold back at a markup, the thin stuff left behind relabelled "healthy."

They came for leather. We got plastic shoes that crack at eighteen months and join the rest of the petrochemical wardrobe in landfill.

They came for wool. We got polyester fleece, shedding microplastics into every river, every ocean, and the lungs of the child wearing it.

They came for tallow soap. We got petroleum surfactants in a pump bottle, and washing in crude oil got rebranded as self-care.

Now they're coming for beef. The pitch is protein grown in a steel tank in Singapore, dosed with synthetic B12 to counterfeit what the original carried for free.

Notice the pattern. Every "improvement" is worse for the person eating it, wearing it, or washing in it, and better for whoever holds the patent.

Real things were refined over thousands of years by people who had to live with the results. The replacements were refined on a quarterly earnings call by people who never will.

The cow, the sheep and the dairy herd were the competition all along. That was always the point.

Across Britain right now, farmers are shearing their sheep, bagging up the wool, and burning it. Some bury it. Some leave it to rot in a corner of the field. The wool-burning has made the odd headline as a protest, but the truth is duller and sadder. The fleece is worth less than the diesel it would take to haul it to the depot.

The numbers are grim. In recent years a kilo of British wool has fetched somewhere between twenty and sixty pence, and hill breeds like Swaledale and Welsh Mountain sank as low as ten. A whole fleece off a mountain ewe might bring thirty pence. Shearing that same ewe costs the farmer around two pounds. One Lincolnshire farmer added it up out loud: over three pounds to shear and cart a single fleece to the depot, and twenty-six pence back. So she burns them. A great many do.

Here is the part that stings. The shearing still has to happen, every year, whatever the wool will fetch. A sheep left in full fleece overheats, struggles to move, and gets eaten alive by maggots. So the job carries on purely as welfare, a cost the farmer simply eats to spare the animal, with the wool itself going on the fire straight after.

And think about what this fibre once was. For centuries wool was the engine of the English economy, the country's greatest export and the crown's main source of tax. It raised the soaring wool churches of the Cotswolds. It turned merchants into princes. To this day, whoever presides over the House of Lords sits on the Woolsack, a literal cushion of wool, put there in the fourteenth century so nobody would forget where the nation's wealth began.

Prices have lifted off the floor this past year, the first real relief in a long while. It still does not cover the shears for a hill farmer. The fibre that built England now smoulders in a heap behind the barn, and almost nobody notices the smoke.
