Lastly I point to the Great Oxidation Event, about 2.4 billion years ago. Photosynthetic microbes started pumping out oxygen. Oxygen was poison to most of the anaerobic world that had been there before. A huge fraction of existing life died because one lineage found a better energy trick and then overran the planet with the waste product. That is not an asteroid story. That is an evolutionary success story that became an extinction story.
