I went to the AI Film Festival at the SF Imax theater, hosted by runwayML, and it taught me what the key differentiator will be in the coming AI era.

The night consisted of 10 short films. For the first 9, if I had to choose one word, I'd say 'Chaotic': things catching on fire, bodies morphing into creepy things, continuous 3-5 second jump cuts, scary sounding voiceovers, sporadic montages.

i kept finding myself thinking = "Why are they so all over the place?" "Are these too deep for me, or are they just confusing?"

Then 10th film started... And it seemed to almost intentionally be made to answer the feeling I had.

Titled 'Total Pixel Space', it made a simple point:

If you think about the total number of images possible (in terms of pixel permutations), *there are more possible images than atoms in the universe. *

And with AI, every single possible image can be made instantly.

And now that anything is possible, greatness in anything is defined by 1 thing: taste.

Before, greatness was defined by what you were capable of making. Only Da Vinci could make the Mona Lisa at the time. Only James Cameron could make Avatar at the time.

These were considered great art, because they were images that others could not make.

But now, anyone can create any image.

Instead, good art will be made by choosing what images go together to form a story that makes sense. And resisting the urge to put other images in there (yes, you can make a house turn into a flaming turtle, but should you?).

And great art will be a collection of frames that tell a story that is so unique and compelling that it makes you feel something to the extreme. The happiest thing you've ever seen. The saddest thing you've ever seen.
