Research overwhelmingly shows that synchronous online instruction is much less effective for many reasons, not least of which is students’ lack of access to reliable tech/WiFi during the specified class meeting times. Admin has not made it clear how they will handle this. (2/2)
The only completely remote instructional option our GAs are being offered MUST be 100% synchronous. If they don’t want that, they can do hybrid, with hopefully” only 25-50% F2F and an asynchronous online component. 😡 #phdchat #AcademicTwitter #COVID19 (1/2)
BREAKING: The Trump administration has rescinded a rule that would have forced international students to leave the country if their colleges hold classes online this fall. The administration was sued over the new policy by Harvard and MIT. https://t.co/5kqSNY7r2C
Today in #prospectus adventures, I got to remind myself how to cite a Tweet in an academic paper, PLUS confirm the correct spelling of Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc. for academic purposes
Now that the news is out in my department, I guess I can tell #AcademicTwitter: I was awarded the Dissertation Research Award at my school for next year, meaning *full funding* w/ no TA duties, & able to focus entirely on my own research and writing! 😎🙌🏻#phdlife
Report shows that SIUC HR wasn’t even aware of basic rules re: hiring practices. Why should I believe they’re actually following the rules when it comes to my job as a lowly GTA (in a department that has already had 2 discrimination issues just this year)? https://t.co/fXVTnVfUWA
@ciromiw @unimelb Candidacy doesn’t always happen after a year, depending on your program. For many English studies programs you do 2 years of course work, then write & defend your preliminary exams (which may take up to a year, depending on circumstances), before you’re advanced to candidacy.
@nmclaren@ncte I try to frame corrective feedback as a question as much as possible, asking for clarification (instead of “not everyone will get this”) or asking for more information (instead of “elaborate on this”). Tends to invite more discussion of the feedback rather than dismissal.
@gina_mantica @AcademicChatter For the past 6 years (my MA and PhD years) when I go in for doctor visits and they ask if I’m experiencing high levels of stress or fatigue I literally just shrug and say, “I’m in grad school,” and they FULLY ACCEPT THAT as an answer to that question. 😳
Back to work today after a spring break spent at my field’s biggest conference, and I feel more motivated than ever to tackle all the proposals and personal statements and revisions I have coming up! #PhDLife#GetItDone
Just now realized I left my MacBook charger plugged up in rm 410 after the 2-3:15 session today at @NCTE_CCCC 🤦🏻♀️ Gonna go by tomorrow morning before we fly out in the hopes it’s still there or got turned in 🤞🏻
