My politics (a thread of threads)
Above all, I want humanity to survive and prosper.
The rest of my politics are just my current best guesses about how to make that happen. Most of them are "strong opinions, weakly held".
I welcome any and all attempts to change my mind.
@AnarchoLlama Caring more about how others might see you than about what might happen, I would say - including (from a later conversation) an explicit "and even IF it happens I'd rather not be the odd one out"
- Oh by the way, Mom, we've been stocking up on coffee and some essential foodstuffs that might be getting more expensive.
- Oh, your dad used to do that too, back in the eighties. Bought a whole two months' worth of rations and stuff in case of a nuclear crisis, and then it never came.
- Still good that he prepared though, wasn't it? Like, there was an actual risk of that happening.
- It never did, though. Waste of money. I don't think you should be acting out of fear like that.
- It's not like we're afraid, Mom. Just, in case a supply crisis hits, we'd rather have some stores than not. And if it doesn't, we'll just use it up, which means we'll have to spend less on groceries over the next year.
- That's what your dad said too. But then the crisis never happened. Waste of money, and it made us look stupid in front of everyone.
- So you'd rather not be prepared than run the risk of looking stupid?
- I think he wanted it to happen, in a way, so he could say 'I told you so.'
- That's...
- You'll feel so stupid if nothing comes of it, you'll see.
