Scientists have released 130,000 baby octopuses into the Adriatic Sea to fight a blue crab that is hurting the fish industry.
Italian researchers are trying to protect Mediterranean shellfish with a biological counterattack. They put a large group of young common octopuses into the Adriatic.
The target is the invasive Atlantic blue crab, an aggressive crustacean from North America. Warmer seas have helped its numbers boom. The crabs pry open local clams and mussels with strong claws.
The damage has already cost Italy’s fishing industry an estimated 200 million euros and hit aquaculture hard.
Researchers at the University of Bologna are using the octopus’s natural diet. The common octopus hunts crabs. In lab trials, a single 600-gram octopus overpowered a 400-gram blue crab. A full-grown octopus can eat up to four crabs a day.
The young octopuses were released off Cesenatico. The hope is that enough will survive to rebuild a native predator population and ease the crab surge. Only a fraction of the day-old animals are expected to reach adulthood. Scientists still think that may be enough to start a lasting check on the invasion.

A wish for a mosquito-free yard can damage the insects that keep gardens and crops alive.
Residential sprays meant to stop a few bites often kill large numbers of pollinators.
The pattern is familiar. A few itchy bites lead to a pest-control call or a municipal fogger truck. Research now says that quick fix has a high ecological price.
The pyrethroid insecticides used in mosquito trucks and backyard misting systems do not target mosquitoes alone. The fog settles on flowers and leaves. Bees, butterflies, ladybugs, and fireflies take a lethal dose. The blunt social-media line is not far from the data: a few bites, many dead pollinators.
A 2025 study by the Xerces Society and the University of Nevada, Reno, measured residues after residential mosquito “barrier” sprays. Yards treated by private companies had, on average, more than six times the pyrethroid load that is lethal to honey bees. The highest samples exceeded 34 times that lethal dose. Three-quarters of samples from neighboring yards also contained pyrethroids. Drift reached levels up to twice a lethal honey-bee dose. Sprays by mosquito-control districts left far lower residues.
Those chemicals do not stay in one lawn. Because many of the insects they kill also eat pests or pollinate plants, the spray can weaken the yard’s own checks on mosquitoes. Removing standing water and favoring native predators is slower. It does not fog the neighborhood.
