[BREAKING NEWS] Suspended SAPS Crime Intelligence Boss Dumisani Khumalo—Who Exposed the Big Five Cartel at Madlanga Commission—Has Been Arrested Again
Suspended SAPS Crime Intelligence Head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo has been arrested. Authorities are currently processing him at a SAPS station in Pretoria. Khumalo was previously arrested in June 2025 along with other senior officials on fraud and corruption charges.
These related to the alleged irregular appointment of an unqualified civilian to a senior position in Crime Intelligence. He was granted bail and has pleaded not guilty in the continuing case. The latest arrest occurs as proceedings linked to the matter remain active. No further details on the specific charges in this instance have been released. Updates are expected as the situation develops.
Suspended SAPS Crime Intelligence Head Dumisani Khumalo gained major public attention after giving testimony at the Madlanga Commission, a judicial inquiry into corruption, organised crime infiltration, and alleged political interference in law enforcement triggered by allegations from Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. During his evidence, Khumalo detailed the activities of an alleged “Big Five” cartel, describing it as a powerful syndicate operating in Gauteng and beyond with extensive criminal reach.
He named controversial businessmen Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Katiso “KT” Molefe as key figures allegedly leading the cartel, and outlined claims that the network had deep links within SAPS structures, other criminal justice institutions, private security companies, and political circles. His testimony further suggested the group was involved in drug trafficking operations, political killings, and coordinated efforts to influence or capture elements of law enforcement.
