🚨 WATCH: Today, while Dr. Tom Flanagan and reporter Drea Humphrey were having civil conversations with students who disagreed with their stance on residential schools, someone chose to pour an entire bottle of water on Dr. Flanagan’s head.
This is an outrageous attack on freedom of speech, and we condemn this assault.
By engaging in this type of behaviour, the assailant disrupted not only Dr. Flanagan and Drea’s right to freedom of expression, but also that of students who disagreed with the pair on the issue of residential schools.
When we tolerate censorship, everyone loses.
A university should be a place where ideas can safely be challenged.
STATEMENT: This will hopefully be our last time discussing yesterday’s unfortunate incident where an individual poured an entire bottle of liquids on Dr. Flanagan.
The incident took place during an event that encouraged students to engage in civil conversations and debates on Canada’s history of residential schools.
Many students came up to the table for over 1 hour and a half to debate Drea and Dr. Flanagan.
These conversations were peaceful, civil, and hopefully helped everyone better understand the other side’s perspective.
Our goal was simple: foster civil debates and encourage students to think critically about the issue through peaceful discussions.
We will soon be releasing the full unedited interviews with students.
Stay tuned! Let’s keep going, and continue to defend every student’s right to free expression without fear of physical violence. 🎤
Thank you to the students who came up to the mic during our time on campus!
Great conversations took place, some that lasted over 20 minutes. 🎤
A crowd of students gathered to hear the debates, although some came to protest the conversation even taking place.
We will be releasing the exchanges in the coming days … stay tuned!
TRUTH doesn’t fear inquiry.
A masked University of Calgary student chose violence over debate today.
I’m proud of the other students who didn’t. Thank you to Canadian Students for Free Speech for having me and for normalizing discussions about Canadian history.
We welcomed every single student who disagreed to come up to the microphone and talk to Dr. Flanagan and Drea Humphrey.
It was a space for an open debate.
Instead, one side of the debate decided that it is no longer time for discussion. It’s time for violence.
We’re extremely disappointed by today’s events, and even more disappointed by the conversations we had with @UCalgary faculty members who opposed our mere presence on campus.
A @UCalgary student gets extremely triggered by the sight of @DreaHumphrey & @RebelNewsOnline presence that he calls for their arrest rather than engaging in debate.
The tolerant & peaceful left 🤡
Tom Flanagan is a gentleman and a scholar.
His response to being assaulted is one of grace and care for the indoctrinated students.
We're proud to host Dr. Flanagan discussing university decolonization with @Aaronpete_@wokal_distance@jonkay next month (link in reply)!

Underscores the need for MORE of these types of events. Students are so accustomed to viewpoint homogeneity that civil discourse is seen as a threat. We need to do everything we can to foster a culture of free speech and open conversation.

🚨 Dr. Tom Flanagan and reporter Drea Humphrey comment after a free speech event on residential schools was cut short because a student poured an entire water bottle on Dr. Flanagan’s head.
This is an outrageous attack on freedom of expression.
When people choose to stop talking, violence happens.
That’s exactly what happened today.
In just two days, we handed out 120 patriotic student handbooks at Concordia and McGill, celebrating Canadian history, honouring influential Canadians, and championing freedom of expression.
40+ students signed up to start free speech clubs. Now it's your turn.
