Children in Cameroon have resumed school for the 2026/2027 academic year. However, those in the Northwest and Southwest have stayed behind because of meaningless ghost town orders and lockdowns.
It appears children, soft targets during armed conflicts, have become the priority of separatist fighters bent on frustrating their education. How can they justify this to the regime in Yaoundé by stopping children from going to school?
After the two-week lockdown and children returning to school, what then? Nothing. But by the time those in the Northwest and Southwest resume, their peers are already ahead.
Now, when opportunities come, children from outside the region get them first, and then the Amba fighters come to justify marginalization.
There is nowhere in the world where people fight a conflict by stopping children from going to school. A part of Spain wants separation, a part of Canada wants separation, and even a part of Morocco. In these countries, children's education has never been used as a bargaining chip.
So, why should the separatists in Cameroon go after school children?

For those of us in French Cameroon sending our kids to school this September. Please also keep in my that they are children not able to attend school due to ghost town in the north/south west region. 😭😭😭

Adam Neumann lost $40 billion and got another $350 million. Your African founder friend lost $40,000 and can't get a meeting. The difference isn't talent. It's the right to fail.
