Protecting Pedestrians: California Urges Drivers to Stay Alert This September

Fremont, Calif. – September is Pedestrian Safety Month in California. The Fremont Police Department would like to remind drivers to slow down and be alert for people walking on our roads. By always taking extra precautions, you can help protect pedestrians and reduce the risk of crashes and injuries. Walking should always be an easy and safe option for getting around any community.

In California alone, 1,090 people were struck and killed while walking in 2024, which accounted for 28% of all traffic fatalities.

“Everyone, regardless of how they travel, deserves to arrive at their destination safely," Lieutenant Ken Kwok said. "Drivers play a critical role in keeping people walking safe. By staying focused and slowing down, especially in areas where there are more people walking, we can help prevent crashes and put safety first on every trip.”

Pedestrians do not have the same protections as drivers and passengers. It’s important to slow down and follow the speed limit while driving. Speed increases increase the severity and impact to someone walking and hit in a crash.

Fremont Police Department offers safe driving and walking tips when behind the wheel or walking:

Drivers
•Know and follow the speed limit.
•Slow down at intersections. Be prepared to stop for people walking at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
•Never drive impaired.
•Avoid distractions such as using a mobile device, deep conversations with passengers or eating while driving. Keep your focus on the road.
•Be extra cautious at night or when driving conditions are less than optimal such as in rainy or foggy weather.

Pedestrians
•When available, use marked crosswalks at signals where drivers anticipate foot traffic.
•Always walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
•Look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
•Be visible at night – consider wearing bright colors, reflective material or using a flashlight.
•Don’t wear headphones or talk on the phone while crossing the street.

Press Release: Fremont Police Seeks Person of Interest in Sexual Assault Investigation

Fremont Police Department is seeking the public's help in identifying a person of interest in connection with a sexual assault that occurred at a local hotel on August 16, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.

The person of interest is described as an adult male with a medium complexion, 40 to 50 years old, tall in stature, and of a thin build. His hair was described as dark with some gray, mid-neck to shoulder length, and fell below his ears. He has light brown or green eyes and may have a mole or bump on the bridge of his nose. The person's race is unknown; however, he could possibly be Hispanic or of mixed race.

A composite sketch has been developed based on witness information and identifying features and is included in this post.

This individual is considered a person of interest and is being sought for questioning. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time.

Anyone who recognizes this individual, has information about his identity or whereabouts, or who may have witnessed related activity in the area is asked to contact Crimes Against Persons Detectives at the Fremont Police Department at 510-790-6900.

🔹 Officer Victor Soto
Officer Soto grew up in Milpitas, California. Before beginning his law enforcement career, he worked as a Security Specialist for Apple, bringing valuable experience in security, professionalism, and customer service to his new role with the Fremont Police Department.
Officer Soto chose Fremont PD because of his personal connection to the community and the welcoming environment he experienced throughout the hiring process.

In Victor's words:
"I have family living in Fremont, and I feel just as much of a connection to this city as I do where I live now. I also really like the environment; Fremont PD has been very welcoming and treated me well."

From the very beginning of his journey, Victor said the Fremont PD recruitment team spoke highly of the city, the department, and its culture—reinforcing his decision that Fremont was the right place to begin his career in law enforcement.

Press Release: August 21, 2026, Homicide Investigation Update #1

On August 21, 2026, at approximately 12:13 p.m., Fremont Police Department received reports of a shooting at a residence on San Pedro Drive. Officers arrived and found one male suffering from a gunshot wound. They provided medical assistance, and the male was transported to a local trauma center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation indicates that this incident began as an armed residential burglary involving two teenage suspects who forced entry into an apartment and assaulted the occupants. During a struggle, one occupant gained control of the suspect’s firearm and fired it towards them, fatally wounding one of the suspects.

The second suspect fled but was subsequently located and identified. He was booked at the Juvenile Justice Center for residential burglary and felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm. The two occupants sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation remains active. This is Fremont’s third homicide in 2026.

On August 21, 2026, at approximately 12:13 p.m., Fremont Police Department received reports of a shooting at a residence on San Pedro Drive in Fremont. Preliminary investigation indicates that a group of male subjects was present at the scene, and a shooting occurred.

Officers arrived and found one male suffering from a gunshot wound. They provided medical assistance, and the male was transported to a local trauma center, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Additional officers responded and detained fleeing subjects in the area. They were taken into custody without incident.

This case remains an active investigation. At this time, we do not believe there are any outstanding subjects or threats to public safety.

This is Fremont’s third homicide in 2026.

Co-Hosted by the Fremont Fire Department (@FremontFire) and the Fremont Police Department, the Public Safety Fair aims to inform community members about safety services and education, including fire prevention, crime prevention, and available local resources for public health and safety. The City of Fremont is warning community members about a scam in which individuals falsely claim to represent a City department—such as Planning, Building and Safety, or other divisions—and attempt to collect related to permits or applications.

Scammers may send emails or letters stating that you owe an immediate payment. In some cases, the email account name may display “City of Fremont,” but the email address itself is fraudulent. Examples of scam email addresses include [email protected], [email protected], or other look‑alike domains.

Please remember:
The City of Fremont’s official email addresses always end with @fremont.gov. Any message coming from a different email domain is not from the City of Fremont.

How to Protect Yourself
- Check the sender’s full email address—not just the display name.
- Verify claims directly by contacting the appropriate City department using information listed on the official City website: https://t.co/vajcHHEqrp.
- Do not click on any links or open any attachments from suspicious emails.
- Do not send payment or personal information in response to unexpected requests.
- Report suspected scams to local law enforcement or the Fremont Police’s non-emergency line [phone], option 3.
