I’m going to play psychologist here and I’m going to talk about Tatis’ body language. I’ve made the mistake in the past of viewing his body language as being childish but after this quote from him in June, “When I’m not doing good, I’m definitely not happy… And I won’t be happy when I’m doing bad, because then I’m being a hypocrite to myself. And it won’t happen.” I came to realize it’s not that he doesn’t care he’s simply just upset with himself.

I know folks want him to be fiery like when Merrill shows his frustrations but everyone’s different. I think a lot of it has to do with what Tatis has gone through in his career especially with the suspension. I think he feels he’ll get penalized if he shows his frustrations so he doesn’t do it. Obviously bottling up all that frustration is unhealthy. I hope he realizes it’s okay to show your frustration at times.

Baseball is the most mentally challenging sport. Even an established star like Kyle Tucker is going through it right now. Tatis plays almost every single day. After each day of not hitting a homer I bet he questions when his next homer will be. If you watch his ABs he’s constantly tinkering with his stance, leg kick, swing etc. that shows me he’s searching and a little lost. I think sticking to a consistent setup will help him but that’s a discussion for another time.

I know fans don’t want to hear any excuses they just want the old Tatis back. I mean I get it but maybe I’m less critical because I understand what’s it like to struggle mentally. This is just my perspective on things. I’m not trying to change your opinion. I just see someone who’s clearly not himself but still finding a way to contribute to the team to the point he’s still a top 10 fWAR position player. I strongly believe in him.

Umpire has called some questionable strikes in his first 2 PAs. He is visibly annoyed at the ump. He doesn’t let it bother him and doesn’t go outside of the strike zone. Do you know how impressive that is for an 18 year old man. He’s a beautiful hitter.

I don’t love the way Tatis has carried himself this year and I’ve come to accept he might not have a high level of maturity. BUT I do think the HBPs have had an effect on him. Let’s also not act like even though he’s struggling offensively since the first month he still hasn’t been a supreme defensive player and plus plus baserunner. The defense and baserunning show me he still cares a ton even though he might not show it with his body language. His xwOBA is still 89th percentile and he’s improved his plate discipline so I don’t think it’s crazy he eventually turns it around offensively. He’s also still currently 11th in fWAR. I strongly believe in him.
