If you've eaten a fig, you've almost certainly eaten a wasp.

Fig trees and fig wasps have coevolved for 80 million years. A female wasp the size of a sesame seed crawls into a fig through a pinhole, loses her wings on the way, pollinates the flowers, lays her eggs, and dies inside. The fig dissolves her body with an enzyme called ficin.

Most commercial figs you buy are wasp-free, bred not to need pollination. Mediterranean and wild figs still are.

Each of about 750 fig species has its own dedicated wasp. Neither can exist without the other.
