St Michael's Church in Burgh by Sands was once the site of the Roman fort of Aballava, home to the first recorded African community in England.

The fort was attached to Hadrian's Wall, and soldiers stationed here came from across the Roman Empire.

We're celebrating #Carlisle's listed buildings starting with Grade I listed Tithe Barn, West Walls. Built c1470s as the barn for the Priory of St Mary, altered in the 19th century, saved from demolition in 1965 by Carlisle & District Civic Trust & restored 1969-71.

#Carlisle's #TurkishBaths is a important piece of British heritage - only 12 remain in working order in the UK after a total of approx 700 in their heyday.
Our vision would see them in use again offering a health & social facility for the community & a unique visitor attraction.

Perched on a clifftop in #Maryport, The Battery, built in 1885 as a Naval Gunnery Training Centre, is now home to the Senhouse Roman Museum. This Grade II listed building features a striking red sandstone exterior, limestone dressings, and an eclectic design with Gothic accents.
