The one free throw rule will be tested at the upcoming NBA summer leagues.

With this rule, any foul that would typically result in one, two or three free throws under standard NBA rules will instead result in a single free throw attempt. That attempt will be worth the same total number of points as the free throws it replaces.

Standard NBA free throw rules will apply during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and throughout overtime.

Imagine evaluating an entire tournament by one game while ignoring hundreds of others. The discussion has always been about disproportionate success rates – not whether public schools are capable of winning.

Imagine if the MHSAA addressed the private vs. public competitive balance issue by surveying its membership, collecting data, forming a study group, and then considering recommendations from the group. And imagine if said group came up with a proposal like this. Would we be in a better place? 😳

The beauty of something like this (rough draft) is it addresses the inherent advantage that some private schools use to dominate while also protecting the private schools that do not thrive athletically. And it avoids creating separate tournaments.

Division 1 private school teams, of course, would remain in D1 regardless of their success or lack thereof.
