AFSF: Kyari Advocates Scaling Up Fermentation at Side Event

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, has called for stronger investment in science, standards and enterprise to scale up fermentation and unlock its nutritional and economic potential.

Kyari made the call while delivering a keynote address at the side event, “Fermentation: From Evidence to Scale,” at the 2026 Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) in Kigali, Rwanda.

He noted that fermented foods such as ogi, kunu and garri are deeply rooted in Nigeria’s food culture, stressing that science and innovation can strengthen traditional practices while improving nutrition, food safety and livelihoods.

The Minister said food security must go beyond food production to ensuring access to safe, nutritious and affordable food, adding that agriculture and nutrition must be addressed together.

He cited evidence that improved fermentation can increase micronutrient availability, reduce anti-nutritional factors and extend shelf life. Extending cassava fermentation from 24 to 96 hours, he said, can increase iron by 61 percent and calcium by 24 percent.

Kyari also highlighted fermentation’s potential to create opportunities for women and young people, urging greater access to technology, finance and markets.

AFSF: Kyari, Heifer International Push Resilient Food Systems for the Sahel

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, has called for stronger investment and partnerships to build resilient food systems capable of withstanding climate, environmental and security shocks across the Sahel.

Kyari made the call at a Heifer International and Mastercard Foundation side event at the Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) in Kigali, Rwanda, where he outlined Nigeria’s priorities for strengthening food and agricultural resilience.

He said, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, food security is being treated as a macroeconomic, security and governance priority, with emphasis on increasing production and productivity, strengthening climate resilience and deepening regional integration.

The Minister highlighted investments in restoring agricultural livelihoods, rehabilitating degraded landscapes, expanding dry-season farming and closing the mechanisation gap. He noted that 2,000 tractors and over 9,000 implements and spare parts are being deployed under the National Agricultural Mechanisation Programme.

Kyari also commended Heifer International’s support for financing, training and digital systems for mechanisation service providers.

He said Nigeria’s projected population of nearly 400 million by 2050 makes it imperative to build future food systems now, stressing that agriculture must increasingly move from subsistence to enterprise.

He called for stronger regional cooperation through efficient food corridors, harmonised standards, market linkages, research and innovation, stressing that “resilience cannot stop at national borders.”
