Before both sides were called to the bench, Judge Carro directed them to meet with each other to finalize juror questionnaires ahead of jury selection on September 8.
I'm 1 of approx. 68 journalists in the courtroom for what may be Luigi Mangione's final appearance before his state murder trial begins next month.
We can expect the judge to set some ground rules for the trial and make some decisions on requests (livestream? overflow room?)
"Claims of exclusion, secrecy... are without merit. I don’t want to hear any more about this. And Mr. Seidemann this is not the first rodeo in this court to have a high-publicity case. There’s a lot of rules the press and public has to go by here and the overflow room which includes not even a phone can be out." -Judge Carro
Both sides are called to the bench.
@CourthouseNews 10:09 - The judge is on the bench. Luigi won't be coming out.
"Unfortunately the defendant will not be produced today," says Judge Carro. "It's no fault of this court."
Peak motherhood is creating an Amazon wishlist in the courtroom for your twins' 1st birthday while waiting for the defendant to enter. #Multitasking#WorkingMom
Currently in the courtroom for Luigi Mangione's next court appearance. Waiting for the defendant and legal teams.
His last pretrial hearing earlier this month on June 3 was "sealed" and Judge Carro blocked the press and public from accessing it.
Unsure if we'll learn today why we were blocked.
This is from the court's decision. The gun is not mentioned in the suppressed evidence from McDonald's. The alleged murder weapon was recovered at the police station. Court about to be adjoured. Running out soon to see if lawyers will speak to press.
Members of the public just walked into the courtroom to be seated and some are wearing black sweatshirts with white writings that say: IT'S THE SAME TRIAL TWICE.
Another sweatshirt reads: LOOK UP. NOT LEFT OR RIGHT.
A third: PEOPLE OVER PROFIT.

BREAKING: Judge Carro says the search of the backpack was improper and says the items in the backpack will be suppressed but the items recovered at the police station will not be.
@CourthouseNews Judge Carro:
"I find that the search of the backpack at the McDonalds is an improper warrantless search. That the backpack was not in immediate control or grabbable area of the defendant.
Those items found in the backpack during the search at the McDonalds will be suppressed."
In the courtroom right now or Luigi Mangione's court appearance. Judge Carro will rule on whether evidence, like the alleged murder weapon and Mangione's backpack, will be allowed during his upcoming state trial in September.
