Lantern series Hal is nothing like the comics one tbh.. you're misunderstanding the comics

The animated series turned Hal into a cocky but ultimately charming flyboy with a heart of gold because it was aimed at a younger audience and could never show the actual comic book version. Comic Hal is the arrogant, womanising test pilot whose massive ego and complete inability to process failure led directly to Emerald Twilight. After Coast City was destroyed he didn’t just grieve he snapped, became Parallax, flew to Oa, slaughtered dozens of his fellow Green Lanterns including people who trusted him, drained the Central Power Battery and nearly ended the entire Corps. That is not a “dark chapter.” That is the character.

The cartoon sanded all of that off and replaced it with quips and team bonding so kids would like him. If the new Lanterns series is making Hal look like a self-absorbed, emotionally unstable wreck who keeps getting himself and others into terrible situations, that isn’t the writers “ruining” him. That’s them finally adapting the source material instead of the sanitised cartoon rewrite that most of you actually grew up on.
