Bishop Parkes is well aware of the excellent trajectory our school was on. He made this difficult decision after exploring every option and taking these factors into consideration. I believe it’s the right call, even though it brings me indescribable pain. 🙏

After careful & prayerful consideration of every option, Bishop Parkes has decided that St. John Vianney Catholic School will close after the 2024-2025 school year. This is devastating news, & the decision was not made lightly. Ultimately, it came down to four key considerations:

3) Demographics: Only 31% of our school families live within the parish boundaries of the barrier islands. Demographic trends don’t indicate an influx of young families to support a student population in the future.
4) Insurance: We will be virtually uninsurable after this event.

Evacuated and rode out Milton in Tampa, so I haven’t been able to set eyes on the parish and school yet. I’m hearing we avoided major flooding, but there’s some wind damage across campus. Hopefully everyone evacuated and stayed safe 🙏

Our parish, St. John Vianney on St. Pete Beach, was flooded and demolished by Hurricane Helene. Now we’re dead center of Milton’s cone, just 11 days later.

Hurricane Helene wrecked our parish, school, & community. Every building on campus was flooded - even the church (our highest building) had over a foot of water. Some had 4.5ft. Many of us lost everything: businesses, homes, stuff. But we’re alive, praise God. And now Milton…
