The truth is, it’s this poor and hungry Nigerians who end up electing leaders for the rest of the country. Their vote isn’t determined by merit or shaped by policy. It’s simply sold to the highest bidder so they can feed.

Across all 36 states of the federation, across creed and religion, these wicked politicians have carefully and deliberately chosen poverty as their primary weapon against the people.

They ensure a vast number of the population is poor and uneducated so when it’s time for elections, ₦5000, 5KG of rice, a litre of cooking oil, and face cap are enough to acquire their votes in multitude across the country. It’s an effective, simple, and for these politicians, cost-effective strategy.

The electoral system has also been designed to be so distasteful and needlessly violent so it’s unattractive to the middle class, working class, and students who are the only group that can bind to remove a corrupt and worthless government from office.

Sensitizing these economically and academically disadvantaged group is largely pointless because that’s not the language they speak. Hunger, tribal and religious identity is what move them. And there’s nothing wrong or special about this. It’s basic human nature.

The only way for Nigerians to reclaim the country through the ballot, assuming this is even possible (I mean politicians now have the temerity to build glossy mansions for judges and we have a security setup that’s subservient to the political class), it’s a through fiercely united middle class (whom are being decidedly wiped out since Buhari’s locust years), working class, and the huge university student population.

Together these educated and slightly economically advantaged group can outnumber the poor population who dominate the polls.

To regain this country, the middle class, working class, and student population must match the corrupt and useless political elites at their game.

It’s pointless sensitizing the poor without matching the economic leverage the corrupt politicians weaponize. Even at that, they will send thugs to destabilize, destroy and put fear in the hearts of the people, this is where those who want change must speak the language of the thugs as there must be no monopoly of action.

Reasoning with a thug won’t work. He doesn’t care for his political and economic rights. He has seen a conductor rose from extreme poverty to become super rich by doing the bidding of the powers that be. He knows if he plays his cards right, steal enough ballot boxes, strike the right blow, and kiss the ring enough, his time will come. So why should he listen to your advice on morality, rights, and freedom?

The only effective weapon is to speak his language. The thug must understand that his desire to deliver for his master will be matched and surpassed by an equal desire to make the will of the masses count.

It has to be a revolution in the real sense. It’s not going to be easy. It will shake this nation to its core. It’s sadly not one that seems remotely feasibly. Or is it?
