Our final session of 6 with the fabulous duo of @MmeLockhartLDSB and @thismomloves. It’s only the beginning of our journey! Bitter sweet as we love this time together but know our team will continue this valuable learning. @kinneyk2004_kim@niagaracatholic@Mrs_Stranges

“Phrasing is a large component of oral reading fluency and is essential to comprehension and overall reading proficiency. Good readers make meaning by reading in phrases; struggling readers limit meaning by reading word by word.” (Rasinski, Ellery, & Oczkus, 2015).
Thank you @TheFCRR for this reading #Fluency idea, to @TimRasinski1 for the research to support it, and to @scholasticCDA for the book to put the research into classroom practice!

Decodable texts are PART OF a reading lesson, not for independent practice AFTER a reading lesson. “It’s your skillful use of instruction before, during and after the reading that makes using decodable books an effective choice for beginning readers.” https://t.co/OYdHmRg0JX

As someone who has taught reading intervention, I’m pretty quiet on the reading wars except to say that when you use the term “war” you will end up with casualties. You’ll dehumanize. You’ll create enemies in a way that prevents dialogue.
Phonics matter. Blending matters. Stories matter. Prior knowledge matters. Helping kids fall in loving with reading matters.
I want to see kids read. I’m not interested in warfare.
Thank you @niagaracatholic for inviting me & @thismomloves to share strategies to help families support Ss early literacy skills at home!
My workshop for #FSL families focused on cross-linguistic skills, phonics &vocabulary development so Ss learn to be bilingual AND biliterate!
So excited for our parent/ caregiver presentation tonight delivered by @MmeLockhartLDSB and @thismomloves. So many parents getting this important literacy message. @niagaracatholic@madamevetere
Posted only a few days ago & we already have over 150 families registered for our Parent & Caregiver Literacy workshop on May 2!

Still think ChatGPT is bad for education?
I just gave it a mark scheme and a sample student answer from an AQA GCSE English Language paper.
Look what happened 👇
*Spoiler: It marked it accurately in seconds*

Learning a second language is NOT easy.
#FSL Ss must learn TWO sets of code & TWICE the vocabulary as their L1 peers. So shouldn’t they have TWICE the support? Often #FSL Ss are lucky if they receive support in just 1 language. Preliminary look at code required to be biliterate👇🏼
Honoured to celebrate the @niagaracatholic FI Kindergarten team from @NotreDameNF at the ECCDC Awards of Excellence tonight. Congratulations Melissa, Sarah, and Roxanne. Their enthusiasm and love of Kindergarten and learning is clear. Bravo!!
A question I am frequently asked is “What does #StructuredLiteracy look like in #FSL Junior grades?”
Syllable types, morphology, vocab, fluency, spelling…& some may still need decoding support, too.
