You accuse Christianity of the “Crusades,” but what were they, and why did they happen?

This is Caliph al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, the Islamic ruler who conquered Jerusalem in 996.

He was called the “Mad Caliph.” Why? Because of what he did to Christians and Jews in Jerusalem.

These were some of the things he did to Christians and Jews:

He had the tongues of Coptic Christians cut out in an attempt to stop their religious rituals.

He ordered Christians to wear large crosses around their necks weighing 2 kg.

He ordered Jews to wear bells around their necks. He also ordered them to sleep during the day and work at night.

He gravely oppressed both Jews and Christians.

What became one of the major catalysts in the buildup to the Crusades was his destruction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

That was the church built over the traditional site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.

The destruction was an attempt to erase the Christian memory associated with the site.

According to Yahya ibn Sa'id, his order was:

“Demolish the church of the resurrection so that no trace of it remained.”

It was after this, in November 1095, that Pope Urban II called the First Crusade at Clermont in the West.

Against this backdrop was centuries of Muslim conquest of formerly Christian territories.

In 634 AD, just two years after Muhammad’s death, the Muslim conquest of the Levant began under Caliph Abu Bakr.

Around 50,000 Christian soldiers were killed.

After years of warfare and exhaustion, Jerusalem surrendered in 637 AD to Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab.

Patriarch Sophronius personally handed the key to the city to him.

Within just a few decades of Muhammad’s death, the first caliphs had conquered vast territories, with Christians making up much of the population of the lands conquered in Egypt, Jerusalem, and Syria.

The conquests eventually extended into Persia, North Africa, Spain, and elsewhere.

It was Charles Martel, in 732 AD at the Battle of Tours, who was able to repel a Muslim force that had advanced into Frankish territory.

So, the Crusades cannot simply be presented as unprovoked Christian aggression.

They arose within the context of centuries of Muslim conquest, warfare, persecution, and the loss of Christian territories.

So what exactly is your point?

I don’t even want to get into colonization.

The Arabs were themselves major imperial powers, and the history of Islamic expansion cannot simply be separated from imperial conquest.

Sundiata Keita was an imperial ruler of the Mali Empire.

And the wars in the Middle East?

Many of them were fought by secular Arab nationalist states, not simply by religious Christians or Muslims.
