Reform of the governance of the Law Society of Ontario, which is currently under consideration, is designed to ensure that no policy can be challenged by an organized group again & will make elected lawyers a minority in their own self-governing regulator. https://t.co/NNC2FIIf1E
The UK Bar has been considering imposing a positive duty to promote EDI. FullStop's Lisa Bildy spoke on a panel discussion of this issue, warning about the experience in Ontario: https://t.co/P1LOqFFfwc
This is a good summary. As one of the lawyers who led the pushback against the mandatory DEI statement of principles, it’s obvious that this proposal is designed to prevent lawyers like me from ever organizing against an unpopular policy again.
And yes, I do take it personally.
“The several hundred pages of documents...confirm the indications I've had for years, which is that some of the major studies behind the Law Society's EDI programs and policies are, sadly, deeply misleading,” says [StopSOP Bencher] Klippenstein. Law Times: https://t.co/tgWjTrLi22
Congratulations to the new benchers.
To our voters: thank you for your support. In spite of nasty messaging, more of the profession voted for us than in 2019. Keep your civic engagement high—these pushback efforts are critically important, even if individual battles are lost.
Regardless of the results of the law society bencher elections, to be released shortly, I am proud of my @FullStopTeam mates who stood up and endured the slings & arrows of a nasty campaign, giving the profession an alternative to the ideological capture of our legal regulator.
@finseraste@LDBildy@PardyBruce .@FullStopTeam campaigned to very last minute, including writing many articles on what will happen to #ONpoli legal profession if #woke, elitist "Bencher Good Governance Coalition" wins @LawSocietyLSO election.
No one can say that you didn't warn them.

"Lawyers are supposed to be the last line of defence for the weak & powerless. It is fascinating to watch the determination of the legal elite to maintain their own power & condemn anyone who criticizes it. But at the LSO, the status quo will no longer do."https://t.co/AdEfOs8j9P
We are not colluding with candidates. We are an independent group asking that the regulatory body for legal professionals regulate in the public interest. We are that public and we are concerned.
A story of secret documents and obfuscation. Add to it the recent revelations of secret board meetings. Time for some transparency at the Law Society of Ontario.
FS's Klippenstein: "The LSO at first denied that I was a director. Then the LSO said that it's up to the benchers as a group to decide by majority vote what information an individual director should get. That doesn't seem to be the law as I understand it." https://t.co/Z3MrrqND5s
Saying the quiet part out loud.
There will be no chance for rank-and-file lawyers to challenge the establishment again if they win. They will eliminate slates & drastically reduce the size of the board.
They will ensure the “unfit” who challenge them never get near the place.
This year, please consider voting for all 40 @BGG_Coalition candidates, who have pledged to do everything they can to end the running of slates and coalitions in future Bencher elections.
