Friends, Reims Cathedral is resplendent with royal motifs; indeed, many French kings were crowned in this very cathedral over the course of six centuries. 

The western facade hosts the iconic Gallery of Kings, in the center of which stands Clovis I—the first Christian king in the region. Clovis is flanked by two figures: his wife, Saint Clotilde, who aided in his conversion, and Saint Remigius, the bishop who baptized him. Tradition has it that the holy oil for Clovis’s baptism was miraculously brought forward to Bishop Remigius by a dove. This gallery, along with many other sights in and around Reims Cathedral, would have reminded the future kings of France of the interplay between church and state. 

Also striking about Reims—aside from its more than 2,000 statues—is just how thin the stonework is in places, bringing more light into the cathedral. The added illumination of the glass imagery and the sheer beauty of this sacred space further focus the mind and heart on God. 

Unfortunately, much of the original stained glass was lost when the cathedral was heavily damaged during World War I. Its exterior walls and even some statues still bear the wounds of the shelling. As Europe began recovering after the war’s end, America’s own Rockefeller family donated an extraordinary amount for repairs to Reims. Whenever these great buildings are in peril, people the world over offer a helping hand. 

Why do these weatherworn buildings hold such an enduring grip on the human heart? Because their beauty opens us, in a uniquely powerful way, to the transcendent source of all beauty. As St. Augustine famously remarked: Our hearts are restless until they rest in God.
