I was twenty-one, exhausted, and running late.

By the time I reached the bus stop, I was sure I’d missed the last bus.

To my surprise, it was still there.

I climbed aboard, slightly out of breath.

“Sorry,” I said. “Didn’t mean to keep you waiting.”

The driver smiled.

“Long day?”

“The longest.”

For the next few minutes, I complained about everything.

University deadlines.

Money.

A part-time job I hated.

The feeling that everyone else had life figured out except me.

When I finally stopped talking, I laughed awkwardly.

“Sorry… didn’t mean to dump all that on you.”

He looked at the empty road ahead and shrugged.

“Better to unload it here than carry it all the way home.”

That was it.

No speech.

No lecture.

Just one sentence.

I got off ten minutes later, thanked him, and didn’t think much about it.

Until years later.

Now, whenever life gets overwhelming, I think about that nearly empty bus.

Sometimes people don’t need someone to fix their problems.

Sometimes they just need a place where they can put the weight down for a while.

Funny how the most useful advice I’ve ever received didn’t come from a therapist, a professor, or a bestselling book.

It came from a man whose name I never even learned.
