Manchester United’s 2–2 draw against Everton was another frustrating result for Michael Carrick, but the game revealed more than just United’s inability to protect a lead.

United twice went ahead, yet Everton continued to find ways back into the game. The late equaliser exposed United’s biggest weakness: game management. Once ahead, United struggled to maintain control and allowed Everton to build pressure instead of killing the game through possession and dangerous counter-attacks.

Carrick’s substitutions have also attracted criticism, particularly the decision to replace Marcus Rashford. However, the manager explained that Rashford was feeling a physical issue, meaning the change was not simply a tactical decision to remove United’s most dangerous attacking outlet.

Patrick Dorgu’s introduction provided pace, power and energy, but his positioning has raised another debate among United supporters. Dorgu is naturally more comfortable as a left-back or wing-back, yet he continues to be used in advanced positions.

This has created the feeling among some fans that Dorgu is becoming a “failed project” because United have not clearly defined his position. His physical attributes make him capable of playing higher up the pitch, but being able to contribute offensively does not necessarily make him a natural winger or forward.

The bigger concern is development. If United see Dorgu as their long-term left-back, constantly moving him forward could slow his progress. If they genuinely believe he can become an attacker, then he needs consistent opportunities in that role.

Ultimately, blaming Carrick’s substitutions alone would be unfair. United’s real problem was their failure to control the closing stages. Carrick must find a way to make United more ruthless and defensively secure, while Dorgu needs a clearly defined role if he is to fulfil his potential at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick has dropped a hint that Patrick Dorgu could be moved into a new role this season — and it's not on the wing.

📋 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:

• That leaves Luke Shaw as the only recognised left-back in the squad

⚽ 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼𝗿𝗴𝘂?
He was signed from Lecce for £25m in January 2025 — and played left-back there. Under Ruben Amorim he was used as a wing-back. Under Carrick, he's only played on the wing so far.

But injuries have limited him to just three or four appearances under Carrick, so the boss says it's almost like having a new signing:

"He's almost like a new player, to have, and it's almost like a new signing in some ways because he's added so much to the group."

🗣️ 𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁-𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵, 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗵𝗲'𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘁:

With United well stocked with wide players but thin at full-back, don't be surprised if Dorgu ends up filling in there before long.
