Jonathan Toews has announced his retirement from the @NHL after 1,149 regular-season games played.
From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jonathan played collegiate hockey with the University of North Dakota beginning in the 2005-06 season. The @NHLBlackhawks selected Jonathan with the third overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Jonathan returned to the University of North Dakota for one additional season before joining the Chicago Blackhawks ahead of the 2007-08 NHL season.
Jonathan made his NHL debut on October 10, 2007 and wasted no time registering his first career NHL goal when he scored at the 13:43 minute mark in the first period. Jonathan amassed 54 points in 64 games in his rookie season, finishing third in Calder Memorial Trophy voting.
In his third NHL season in 2009-10, Jonathan put up 29 points in 22 Stanley Cup Playoff games, winning the Conn Smythe as Playoff MVP, en route to the Blackhawks capturing their first Stanley Cup in 49 years.
Three seasons later, in 2013, Jonathan and the Blackhawks once again hoisted Lord Stanley’s Cup, as Jonathan earned Frank J. Selke Trophy honours as the league’s best defensive forward. Two seasons after that, Chicago would be crowned Stanley Cup champions for the third time in six seasons, with Jonathan taking home the Mark Messier Leadership Award.
Jonathan played 1,067 regular-season games for Chicago across 15 seasons, serving as team captain for all but one season.
After two seasons away from hockey, Jonathan returned to the NHL for the 2025-26 season, signing with his hometown @NHLJets, appearing in all 82 regular-season games for Winnipeg. Jonathan concludes his NHL career with 383 goals and 912 points over 1,149 games.
Internationally, Jonathan is a member of the Triple Gold Club, having captured a World Championship (2007) and Olympic gold medal (2010, 2014) with Team Canada to go along with his three Stanley Cup victories. Jonathan also earned a gold medal at the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Hockey Championships and captured the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Congratulations on your retirement, Jonathan, and welcome to the NHL Alumni Association!
